Line Breeding
Can someone give me a quick overview of what is and isn't acceptable here? (I know this is possibly going to open out into a lot of opinions but still...)
I understand people will put a grandparent onto a dog but personally, I don't think it's right to put a dog onto his own dam? Am I wrong...?

Re: Line Breeding
Beth the KC wont register any puppies that are bred by daughter to father and vice versa, something I cant quite grasp because they will register a litter from a dam that has whelped to her uncle( her sires full litter brother) someone will be along to explain this fully.

Re: Line Breeding
For me the closesness of the relationship between the sire and dam is not the be all and end all. Inbreeding co-efficients (COIs) are more useful. Mateselect has made it easier to browse the COI's of proposed matings BUT the kC calculation can be very flawed. I think 'we' should try to avoid the same dogs appearing in a pup's parents, grandparents and great grandparents but on occasion closer breeding may be acceptable providing the COI is low and relevant health tests are done. for linebreeding/ inbreeding to be safe a breeder must be incredibly knowledgable about the dogs/lines they are using. I don't know why the kC allow 'uncle' matings; maybe they just need to think about it a bit more!
As an aside linebreeding is often said to be used to fix desirable traits, but remember it can also fix undesirable traits such and hidden health problems.

Hi again Michelle and thanks Vicky.
That was my initial reaction re Kennel Club registration, but the resulting progeny is registered
I've been provided with this particular female's KC registration number...

Re: Line Breeding
It's also worth remembering that the close mating 'ban' is quite a new thing for the KC and that they seem to retain the right to break their own rules regarding age at whelping, number of litters etc in some circumstances!!!

Re: Line Breeding
Yes their rules are very flexible when it suits... But a mother/son mating just seems ludicrous

Re: Line Breeding
yet breeding mother to son and father and daughter in poultry is commonly done in the show fraternity which is the corner stone of starting a successful show line my orpingtons i have kept a line pure and outcrossed some and the outcrossed progeny were weaker and harder to rear. i know this will put the cat amongst the pigeons but in certain cases why not allow mother son etc if uncles can.

Re: Line Breeding
Cat amongst the pigeons will not produce progeny though.
