Re: Making a dog transit box
I agree with Wullie - most wooden boxes end up too heavy and are a real struggle to move. I have made several and have used very thin plywood (1/8th inch I think) for the 4 sides, floor and top. All these are held together using softwood battens(say 1"x1") , PVA wood glue and panel pins (t...

Re: Anyone sent their pup away for training?
If you want a trained dog and don't want to train it yourself then definately buy one that is fully trained rather than buiying a pup and sending it away for training. The previous advice on these lines is quite right and Wullie and others are spot on - not all pups will make the grade  so why...

Re: water
Vicky, You are quite right that dogs can be very different in their approach to water. Some will go straight in and love it whilst others really don't like it at all to start with. I have had both - and all the variations in between. I think that introduction to water is covered in every gundog trai...

Re: Refused retreive
I would suggest leave it a few days or even a couple of weeks before you try any retrieving - Do some other things she really enjoys doing with you. Give her lots of fuss and build up her confidence as much as you can. Then, when you are ready to try again use something that she has enjoyed retrievin...

Re: Training for trials
I assume that the advice was for the trials trainer to train this dog rather than for them to train the owner? If so, I think the answer is pretty obvious - (Q) why do a few names figure more often than others in the winners list?. (A) because they are better trainers (I agree that after a while the...

Re: Springer Advice
You say in your original post At the moment she recalls mostly ok, heeling is average (although this is only recent), she's very very eager to retrieve but steadyness isn't a strongpoint. I find at home or in the garden she does things perfect, walking on the street she's average and anywhere like a...

Re: Sloe Gin
I generally freeze even the soft fruits before I add the other ingredients but I don't think it matters. You can either kill all the undesirable bugs on your blackberries by freezing them first or by immersing them in alcohol!

Re: Sloe Gin
I agree - when they are there and ripe then pick them. Freeze them for at least a week before use - a few months and they will still be fine. You will find that there is no need for pricking or any other preparation. Just put the frozen sloes into your container, add gin and sugar and shake the cont...
