Re: How to become a pro

I know this is an old thread but I only just came across it! Just wanted to add my opinion: Being great at gundog trainer doesn't automatically mean that you are a great gundog training instructor, in a similar vain that being a great footballer doesn't mean that you will be a great football manager...

Re: Retrieveing with an Adult Dog

Did a really good session with him this morning and we are finaly hetting somewhere witht the retrieve, I use a straight fence line, put one in front of us and one behind, send for one and then the other. Hes figured out that the sooner he comes back the sooner he gets the second one. Most people sa...

Re: Retrieveing with an Adult Dog

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Dis a long retrieve this evening and all was well until the last 4 feet when he shot under a fence into a field :brickwall: Went into some woods and did a little hunt up and found a ditch so did some retrieves along the ditch using it as a channel, plenty of chan...

Ive tried long check cords, placeboards, food, toys etc and all had some degree of success, but once I removed the training item we were back to where we started

Re: Retrieveing with an Adult Dog

What does your 'proper' trainer advise, & why do you think it isn't working? I agree with the others that if the dog is playing keep-away every time it is sent for a retrieve then, at this age, you need to go back to working on a more structured retrieve in contained surroundings so you have mo...
On lead/line, when he runs out and picks up you are with him running backwards giving him big praise and timing the taking of article from him.
Do you mean when I send him, go with him or as he picks up start moving away?

Re: Retrieveing with an Adult Dog

How would you describe his recall when he has an empty mouth? Is it 100% reliable? I ask because you say he is happy to hold an item and he is happy to give an item to you so it doesn't seem as if the retrieve is perhaps the basis of the problem? With introducing steadiness has he perhaps learned t...

Re: Retrieveing with an Adult Dog

I agree with Wullie, you have the steadiness keep it! Work backwards EG concentrate in the present, can be done in the kennel/room dummy in gob, with him in front of you just holding the dummy with plenty of praise. Start with very short time, steadily increasing. Don't bore him silly, couple of ti...
