Re: Pre mating tests

Thanks all, I've ordered some of the swabs and yes I do have a dog here to check, he's sired 1 litter previously so will use him to help check, but I wanted to be sure as I will be travelling a considerable distance to the stud and the bitch only comes into season infrequently and very lightly.

How many of you would use the vet test to determine if your bitch is ready to travel to the chosen stud?
Are these tests accurate or do you go on your knowledge of the bitch etc?

On 2 shoots I attend we are positively encouraged to shoot jays, the keeper is adamant they cause damage to nesting song birds and some of the guns are also keen fly fishermen and the feathers are therefore highly prized. Yesterday on the last day of a partridge and grouse shoot I attend on a moor up in Wensleydale my young ESS dog impressed with a very usual retrieve. The drive was in a valley with a stream approx 12 feet wide and 12 to 18 inches deep running pretty fast due to heavy rainfall the previous day's, I w...

Re: Picking up on a shoot

If you've been asked to be part of a team, explain yours and your dog's lack of experience to the picker up in charge and let them take you under thier wing until you and your dog are confident in what's required, oh and enjoy!
