Re: stopping spaniels
At the moment he is at most 30yrds away... always checking in, tbh i have done very little with him until now but am starting in earnest now. Naj, what is field control? I use my dogs for rough shooting and apart from the odd field of beet or broccolli am always hunting cover or hedgerows so the dog...

Re: stopping spaniels
I like dogs that go like the clappers. To get that I didn't train dogs to stop until they'd taught themselves to "go." Sometimes a dog would be pushing 1O - 11 months old before I began to change the previously taught "should stop" (to whistle) to "must stop." I'd let ...

Re: stopping spaniels
I've owned two border collies, one lab and two GSP's that stopped to whistle as if their legs had been chopped off. All of those dogs were trained to stop dead by use of a lead and then a check cord. I don't train that way now and my last several dogs have all taken time and distance to come to a d...

Re: Nervous
What's he like if you shot something while he was sat with you - would he retrieve it? I agree with the others that this sounds like an association between punishment and birds. Blinking doesn't just crop up on its own, there has to be a reason and it's invariably one linked with a negative experie...

Re: Nervous
honestly do not think the dog is at fault here, I think you did something that worried it. I do agree but cannot think what it was i have done incorrectly save the yank on the checkcord.... he is probably the most sensitive dog i have everhad, i will as suggested go out without the gun and i have re...

Re: Nervous
Yes he was chasing game at the time, i haven't really noticed any difference without the gun tbh... what i have observed is if a bird sits tight he turns away and if the bird is on the move his presence puts the bird under pressure which generally results in a flush Are you proving birds that he in...

Re: Nervous
How heavy was the cover, he's not cover shy is he? Scent has been decidedly weird round here this year, hunted a hedgerow three times this morning and somebody else twice, we both found birds each time. Third person to walk over a field of short grass to the game cart, I found two more partridge. I...

Re: Nervous
I am now thinking back to when i did steady to wing training that you mention it and recall yanking him back on a checkcord and blowing the stop whistle possibly even saying the word 'No'. What was the reason for that? Was he chasing game when you "yanked him back"? What is he like when y...

Re: Nervous
What's he like when you just shoot a gun without any game about? Have you been doing steadiness training on the flush prior to the season starting? Naj When a shot is fired he jumps, not as in a nervous jump but more looking all around so see if anything is falling more of a bound i suppose you cou...
