Re: Re-call/hunting problem!

Thanks for the advice. I do appreciate all advice. I do see a difference when I take a firmer approach with her but she can be quite sensitive as well. So we will be going to see a trainer in the next couple of weeks to see what he has to say. I also purchased a DVD by David Lisett. It was a good DV...

Re: Re-call/hunting problem!

As others have said, get a good training manual or DVD & follow a set training plan, then in light of that others will be able to advise you on what to do when things don't work out. It's hard to suggest anything when we don't know whether you use compulsive methods or reward-based ones, or how...

Re: Re-call/hunting problem!

On another note - her sit stay is quite good when close. However, she seems to look everywhere else apart from at me no matter how much I try and get her attention. She doesn't move but only looks at me for short glances then is more interested in what is happening around her. As I said previously w...

Re: Re-call/hunting problem!

Joe Irving Training spaniels is a good one. There are others more than worth a read but I can recommend the structure of this book (something that appears missing at present) Thanks for the recommendation. It will be nice to see a structured training plan. Much of what I do at the minute is from th...

Re: Re-call/hunting problem!

A good trainer for your problems will Be more beneficial than a good book at this stage as you may get confused initially until its explained and shown rather than a book and you filling in the blanks. Free running is a problem as a pup as it now just wants to hunt and chase. A few sessions in the ...

Re: Re-call/hunting problem!

sounds like you could just do with reading a few good books on spaniel training and looking for the steps that have bee missed or not fully instilled. some dogs haven't even started training proper at 9 mnths, don't get angry and try not to get frustrated- its meant to be fun for you and the dog. S...

Re: Re-call/hunting problem!

Teach her to hup every time you say it. Much easier than calling her off something she's already chasing. Tell or whistle her to sit and voila! Problem solved. I have been whistling to get her to sit but not worked on it from a distance. When she has her nose down hunting she tends not to pay atten...

Re: Re-call/hunting problem!

If you are quick enough to get after her as soon as she bolts then bring her back to where you first blew the stop whistle . It's quite dificult to catch her when she decides to go. I try and get her attention on me when I notice she has seen something. Thet works for short periods but dificult to ...

Re: Re-call/hunting problem!

What are you doing when she bolts ? This is part of the problem. I'm not sure what to do. I currently go after her getting more and more angry! She does come back but depending on how her chase goes it can take a bit of time usually within 30 seconds. I then tend to put her back on the lead for a b...

Re-call/hunting problem!

I am having problems with my 9 month old Springers recall. Not an un-common problem for a springer as I can gather! We did book in for a 1-2-1 with a gundog trainer but she came into season so we have delayed it for a few weeks. I have got a copy of total recall but that seems very much reliant on f...
