Re: training HPR's to sit
Absolutely fantastic advice MunstyM really spot on! I say that with such conviction because that is pretty much what I have been starting to do. I use 'wait' around the house quite a bit, going through doors, her waiting after going through a door/ gate for me to shut it etc. It has the benefit that...

Re: training HPR's to sit
Are we all talking about the same breeds here. MunstyM, can't see what teaching a sit/stay/recall has got to do with a dog on point and why you would need to use a sit, stay or recall command when a dog is pointing. Naj Well I'm probably leaving myself open to a huge telling off from you guys...

Re: Residential Training
One possibility Tina is Peter O' Driscoll who lives near Kelso in the Scottish borders. He is a "pointer man" but he does have experience of HPR's too. Wullie Thanks for this Wullie, I've only just spotted this post. I haven't come across his name so far surfing the web so I will definite...

Re: Residential Training
Thanks for the tips. I looked at Steve Kimberley's website but could only see courses at his home in Devon? It looks like I will need to travel and invest a considerable amount of time and money into getting this right. Both of which are in short supply!

Re: Residential Training
I really want to train my dog myself, we are hugely bonded and to be honest that is about the only thing we have going in our partnership because otherwise we are both complete novices making lots of mistakes. But I would be really interested in residential training for us both! HPR specific trainer...

Re: online, off grid and trying to train a GWP
My understanding of the situation now is that it's vital to find the "right" land to start (re) introducing my dog to hunting - and that I also need to learn how to act and how I expect her to act on a given piece of land - the difference between hunting a woodland to hunting a wide open f...

Re: online, off grid and trying to train a GWP
I apologise for not having travelled down to see you Tina. My excuse is my health. I would need to travel down there and back again on the same day and I would be unable to walk very far with you while I was there. We would only get about 2-3 hours of walking, talking and work done with many stops ...

Re: online, off grid and trying to train a GWP
Yes Tina, I did correct Rosie quite firmly when she broke the rope for the second time. For me "Do not correct in the presence of game" ends once the game has been flushed......the dog, if it moves in after that it is then chasing or at the very least it has ignored the stop whistle. I co...

Re: Hard mouth, delivery, and my fingers.
Tina: With regards your question - basically yes - you just replace a dummy in any sort of set-piece direction exercise with a loaded food bowl Matt, thank you very much for this! I love the idea and will definitely give it a go. I really appreciate the detail in your answer like remembering to vis...
