Chasing

I've had one of those weekends where everything has gone very pear-shaped. I was up North doing some walking with the dog and over the few days he found and flushed two rabbits and went after them, buggered off across a moor on the smell of sheep (thankfully the sheep were no where to be seen), and ...

Re: Cold Game

All went well, although he did start his training a little earlier than anticipated. A friend took him out at lunch whilst I was at work and sent me a photo of him proudly displaying a dead rabbit he'd found. She was much less happy about it than I was. Against all advice, once the proper training s...

Cold Game

I've got my hands on a few frozen pheasants to try with my Cocker. He's just over a year and doing well with dummies and dummies with wings on, so I'm going to try the real thing with him. Any general tips or tricks on how to best go about the first couple of sessions? I assume just basic retrieves ...

Teaching blinds

Hi All Has anyone got any advice on how to teach a spaniel blind retrieves. He's currently fine with left, right and back if he's seen the dummy go down but if I try and send him on a blind retrieve, or he's forgotten where the dummy was and I try and direct him, he'll go in the direction I ask but ...

Re: Hello from Bathgate

Hi Ross

I'm Edinburgh based with an 8 month old WCS, my first dog too. Give us a shout if you ever fancy doing some training together, it may well be the blind leading the blind right enough!

Re: Running off and not interested in retrieving

I feel your pain. I've got a 6 month old cocker who was behaving in exactly the same manner, to the point where one day I spent an hour and a half trying to get hold of the little %£!* as he just kept running off into cover and ignoring me completely. My break through moment was getting him to quart...

Re: A blondes attempt at training a Cocker

I've got the same issue with my cocker of him dropping the dummy at my feet rather than holding it, could you explain how you used treats to teach him to hold on?

Meet Findlay

This is Findlay, my 6 month old cocker spaniel, and true to form he's certainly got plenty of "character".... Breeding wise the sire was FTCH Rollafields Redbud at Naxshivan and dam is Hope of Dawn, who's got quite a bit of Maesydderwen in her. So hopefully if I don't mess up his training ...

Re: Very quick question on loose leash

I've been using the method described by Dartmoordog with my cocker pup for the last couple of months, which stopped the pulling (mostly) but he was still leading me/darting towards interesting objects rather than a holding a stricter heel position. Now that he's six months and his concentration is a...

Re: Playing keep away

Thanks guys, I suspected it was probably adolescence kicking in. I guess a bit of patience and lots of consistency and everything will be dandy. Patience isn't my strong point but I guess it's a learning curve for both of us!
