I've never been to a gamefair and I'm thinking of going to Moy this year. I would like to see how Flo would manage in the scurry but I'm not sure if we're up to it. I've searched the Forum for information and had a look at some of the videos on YouTube. Can anybody tell me about what the dogs are likely to be asked to do? Are all scurries the same? Is speed of retrieve the main aim,not the delivery etc?
Thanks!

Re: Moy Scurry
I've never been to the Moy scurry Pat but I would imagine scurrys (unless they are the qualifing ones ie Mitsubishi) follow a pattern. They're there to encourage people and get folk to 'have a go'. Ones I've done have been......you enter and receive a card that you take around with you to the 'tests'. Around three or four tests for which you receive a mark..........a marked retrieve, a water retrieve, a retrieve over an obstacle and at Harwood a fourth test a (fairly easy) blind.
there are the little 'have a go' scurries ie the short fence, the long retrieve...all were a 'mark' before the fence, then a 'mark' over the fence.
So to answer your question........no not all the same, but fairly similar unless you're entering some kind of 'serious' scurry where a large prize is up for grabs.
Just get in there and let the dog have a go.

and yes it was on speed not perfection.

Re: Moy Scurry
Thanks for the information Ali - very helpful. I'll think we'll have a go!
One last question, do they need KC details for the entry?

Re: Moy Scurry
from memory, the moy scurry is a seen out to the front over a smallish fence, (just above knee height) of around 50 yeards and then another seen into the water around 10 feet out, and around 50 yards away again, it is of course timed and and time is added for dropping the dummy or for running in.
there are other varients IE a double blind etc over the fence that you can also enter and the competition is split into retrievers, HPR,s, spaniels and then any other breeds no KC reg needed, you can enter as many times as you like.
hope that helps!

Re: Moy Scurry
Thanks tjack - that's helpful. I think we could manage most of that.....maybe....so we'll have a go! It should be fun.. I'm looking forward to watching the other dogs in the tests to see how it should be done!

Hi,
Here is my attempt at a Scurry this Summer at The Scottish Game fair, Scone Palace, Perth
Murphy our 14month Lab getting ready for his first season has a go!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JKiQXVW ... rofilepage
will give you an idea of how easy it can be!
first marked 50ft, the next over a fence both with the sound of a dummy launcher then hand thrown.
gives a good indication of how steady you`re dog is with all the noise, smells and other distractions in the arena.
Stuart.

Re: Moy Scurry
Thanks Stuart. Great video and your dog looked like an expert!
I did enter Flo for the scurry afterall on Friday at Moy..... she won as she was the fastest spaniel and got a trophy! I was truly amazed. I posted the details on General Chat under "Moy". Her win was probably a bit of a fluke although they told me the field was 60 dogs but that would have included retrievers as well....but I was really chuffed anyway because she is 3 years old and I didn't start training her until 7 months ago. I'm very glad we entered as it was fun.
