Billy can't be KC Registered!!!!! Let down
Billy can't be KC Registered!!!!! Let down
Afternoon All
Well, we have had Billy for about 2 months now, we got him from an advert on epupz, which advertised working cocker pups, legally docked and KC registered etc etc. We went along to have a look at him and the parents, this was our first working dog but i applied the same sort of logic that i had used when i have bought previous pups. We saw both parents and their pedigree papers plus their individual 5 generation pedigree. To be honest we were not too concerned about his actual pedigree, we wanted a good strong healthy pup who was outgoing. I wanted to do some gun dog training with him with a view to do some beating and picking up etc, nothing as glamorous as trials or any other high end stuff as i am a complete novice with gundogs and training. There were two pups in the litter, the parents were both good looking dogs and seemed nice and healthy.
We paid £430 ( advertised at £450) for him due to a bit of cheekiness on my part, the breeders seemed genuine and we were there for a good hour. We were told that his KC papers would be sent through within the next 3 weeks or so as they had just sent them off. I did not question this as we had seen the parents and their pedigrees.
We still hadnt received the pedigree papers through so i wrote to the breeder, it took a few days to get a reply as they had been on holiday but last night we got the following call:
Apparantley Billy cannot be KC registered as the bitch he was bred from has had too many litters within the allotted time limit set by the kennel club, cant remember whether it was 6 litters in 8 years or 8 litters in 6 years? Anyway the breeder said they had thought this one was her final litter to be in the time frame, unfortunately not as it turns out and the KC sent them a letter. The bitch didnt seem like a worn out breeder who has been used to churn puppies out and the breeders were extremely apologetic. They offered to take Billy back and give us a full refund, this is not an option for us as he is a massive part of our family already and a good dog. OR one of their other bitches is due to have a litter in about 8 weeks time, this is her second litter, they have offered us the pick of a bitch from that litter at a massively discounted price and the guarantee it will be KC registered. Billy not being KC registered is not such a massive problem for us as we were not planning on trialling him etc its just that we feel let down by it. I have asked the breeder for a copy of the KC letter, copy of the fathers pedigree and a copy of the mothers pedigree plus a refund for the KC registration fee.
I suppose at the end of the day it is our own fault but we still have a cracking dog that we are extremely happy with. We will decide in a few weeks as to whether we want another bitch but i doubt we will bother to be honest.
What would you have done in this situation?
Kind Regards
Mike

I would have asked for a refund and kept the dog as a rescue or at least paid just the cost of a non KC pup so probably about half that

As a handler, its impossible to make your dog perform better than it is, but very easy to make it perform far worse.

Re: Billy can't be KC Registered!!!!! Let down
If the kc reg isnt going to affect you, and you know have a bond with the pup then I wouldnt worry as what is done is done.
And only get a second dog if you can be sure you really can manage and want one, two very young untrained pups will be hard work.
I dont think you are the first to be caught out, intentionally or unintentionally by the breeder, but what i would say is when we got our pup we were shown the kc paperwork which had his registered name on it and then the bits about how we got his registration transferred over to us, which we brought away with us and did online ourselves. This proved he was kc registered and there was plenty of time for the breeder to do this before letting the pups go, so i would always worry about the 'it will follow on' story as there really should be no need for this to happen.
Good luck with your pup, at the end of the day the actual dog is more important than the piece of paper if you dont wish to trial etc.

Rascal .... appreciate your comment about buying a dog of Epupz but we bought a last of the litter labrador dog from there £250.00 ! ... all health tests done etc and he is doing really well at his working tests and Andy is hoping to do some trialling with him !!! he is also one of the best picking up dogs Andy has had !! .... bargains can be had !!!Sorry to hear that and you probably knew no better but I would most definitely not have bought a pup off epupz for a start

Mikefor a start and I hate to say this but you can't even be sure the dogs you saw and the papers matched either.

Re: Billy can't be KC Registered!!!!! Let down
Following a long drawn-out argument with the Kennel Club, it turned out that my Mum's lab could not be registered.
The breeder (who, to make it more awkward, was a friend
) gave them back half of what they paid for him which brought the cost down to what non-registered labs were going for around their way. The breeder had alternatively offered to take the youngsters back and I know that one person did do this because he was planning on eventually trialing with his pup.
Needless to say, whilst all this was going on the pup had wheedled his way in to everyone's affections and as my parents had no intention of trialing, breeding or showing, the KC registration was not a necessity.

Re: Billy can't be KC Registered!!!!! Let down
I suppose i was a little bit too trusting and should have asked for the paperwork with his registered name on it! And as you said we are happy with the dog so its not all bad. I know 2 pups will be hard work which is why we will give this some though over then next couple of months and to be honest i would be stupid to get another pup from the same breeder anyway!rolosmum wrote:If the kc reg isnt going to affect you, and you know have a bond with the pup then I wouldnt worry as what is done is done.

I did ask for a refund and the only offer they had was that they would take the pup back for a full refund. We didnt want to do this as i already have a strong bond with the dog and his training is going extremely well (so far!). I suppose £430 is alot for a non KC pup but in a way he is worth 10x that to us as he is a cracking dog so we are not too worried overall.arwesa wrote:I would have asked for a refund and kept the dog as a rescue or at least paid just the cost of a non KC pup so probably about half that
