Over the years all my pups have been done (by my vet) at about 8 weeks. No problems except one that "wandered". My Barbet is DNA profiled as well.

We now wait until the dogs are hip/elbow scored because in the past the chips have moved to different places ( between legs , above elbow ect. ) as the dog has grown. Risky I suppose but thats how we do things now.

Well!!!! Here is one who has the majority of her dogs chipped?? Why, cause it was going cheap.. I didnt get Daisy done after seeing some of the other dogs sqeal and tbh if she ran off I wouldnt want her back    Just kidding.. However drake and Sooty are not chipped.. Why? because all my dogs apart from Belle's chips have migrated, sweeps sticks out from her jugular in the front of her neck and it concerns me. I will however get them done and do it myslef as I do chipping, well one day when im brave enough as it is totally irrisponsible not to xx

Up until 6 years ago chipping wasn't thought about in my circle but since then had two springers chipped at 10 weeks, cavalier done by breeder at 8 weeks when collected, sprocket done at 10 weeks, lab done at 10 weeks and the same with the cocker. We do have two 8 & 9 year old springers which haven't been done. I was told vets don't like to chip too early and prefer to do it at second injection but don't know if that is true!

So depending what country you are in! what is the 'Law', regarding micro chip age?
Leaving until 'hip score'/elbow ', age ,may not be an option?

The docking vet we use refuses to dock unless they chip as well, we have the pups chipped in their 7th week, and are then given the docking certificates, also at the time of chipping if the new owners so request we have their pup's first vaccination done.

I had my current two dogs tattood for competitive purposes, the younger when he was a year old, the elder at 2. I did not get either of the chipped until much later again for competitive purposes.

I will have my next pup chipped and tattood in the nest. Tattooing an adult dog with a thick ear leather is not much fun for the dog.

Hi Vicky,

what is your experience of chips that have 'seriously' moved and those that have failed? My personal experience is that one dog's chip has moved into his shoulder and that of seven dogs who were chipped at the same time two failed and that despite extensive x-raying no trace of either chip was found so both had to be replaced.

just seen this new thread from another thread i was commenting on. Shame it wasn't kept on the same thread.

I think most of the people on that thread were saying that they kept to the law Vicky. They as I choose not to have the chips done until they are 12 weeks old which is allowed by law. As my vet said he cannot see why vets chip at such early ages as movement of the chip and even spinal damage can be and has been caused by doing so. All of the vets in that surgery agree with him.
To be honest, A law that is meant to make animal welfare better has made it worse for the animal as far as I am concerend. A good law IF you take away the part that force/allow people to chip their dogs so early, especially when so young. I find it hard but know it to be true that their are vets out there that force you to have the chipping done before the pups leave their mum or even as early as 2-3 days old. I do not want to take the risk of causing my pups any of the above damage, it just isn't worth it. If you have 8 pups you have 8 docking papers, so this twaddle that you may not use the paper work for another dog is just that, TWADDLE and an excuse.

May I add I totally agree with chipping, all dogs should be chipped as all of mine are. BUT not at such an early age , I would be happy if the law allowed you to have your dogs chipped at or by 6 months old.

Thank god I have good vets who put the welfare of my dogs before anything else.
