Re: Kennelled or not?
There IS some truth in the 'kenneled dogs work harder' 'myth'. It's all about rewards....
Dogs (and humans) do things which are rewarding more and do things which are unrewarding (or unpleasant) less.
Rewards for dogs include food, play and attenion ()and sex, but I don't see how I can put that into a training session!).
The value of each reward varies wih individual dogs and with what has just happened....
If the dog has just been fed he is less likely to do a fast recall for food (unless he's a labrador on a diet!); if the dog has just done 20 retrieves on a hot day witholding the next retrieve for failing to sop sharply on the whisle won't be as much of a 'punishment'; a social dog like a spaniel ill see the slightest contact as reward if he has been deprived of human contact for 23hours and.....if a dog is with you all day and hears 'good boy' all day just because he is super cute then 'good boy' won't be as big a reward when you go out training.
None of this means you can't have a highly trained housedog; it just means you have to up-the-ante reward wise compared with those training kenneled dogs.

Pink Gundog wrote:Its a crock of shit!! Kenneling dogs 24/7 so they are more up yer erse than house dogs is a friggin myth!! I'sT the bond you have with a dog whether its tied up to the titanic or not!! Dont listen to them DO your own thing and make that bond with your own dog!!
Re: Kennelled or not?
As long as you don't continually bombard the dog with meaningless chatter and don't allow it to get away with murder indoors and expect it to behave when out training then indoors is fine.
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.
Re: Kennelled or not?
My dogs all live in the house. Even more shocking as well as Gundog work they get to do flyball, play tug games, and run loose when walking in the countryside
Seriously, I think that my Rescue dogs should be treated as the marvellous, sentient beings that they are, and given the best life possible, and not just according to how I can "make" them work best
I think its as much about what you want from your dogs, I keep dogs for companionship and because, well, I just like having them around (I work from home) I would probably suffer more from Seperation anxiety than they would if they lived outside

Re: Kennelled or not?
Pace & response are both down to management & have little to do with whether a dog is kenneled or not. I kennel my dogs for convenience & we also enjoy having them in the house for part of each day. The best working dogs I have ever owned were ones that I brought in to live with us 24/7 because at the time I had no other dogs in the kennel to keep them company. We built up a great rapport & their gun & game sense jumped ahead in leaps & bounds because they were my sole shooting dog & therefore got masses of work experience.
I think that dogs are very good at compartmentalising (is that a word?
) between their different roles. If dealt with consistantly they are very good at seperating their housepet role with that of their work role or kiddies plaything. The same with their relationship with people, they know who they can get away with ignoring & who they have to respond to.

Re: Kennelled or not?
hi
i did laugh when i read your post Naj - they do know who they can get away with things - my other half is terrible with them and lets they get away with everything
they are so different with me - no barking or jumping up when i come in etc.
all ours are house, sofa and bed dogs and it hasent affected working ability at all.
when working - the switch goes on and stays on till we come home. then it is into i will get into the archair and snook for a while.
i have never had kennel dogs so i couldnt comment on the difference.
they are first and foremost pets and if they work then thats the icing on the cake
