I was researching Weimeraners & came across some videos made by a guy in the States hunting snipe over some of his dogs & they were excellent gundogs in all respects. Their performance came as a real surprise to me but he was able to train, work & shoot over them under natural rough shooting conditions, which perhaps the majority of enthusiasts lack in this country. I do think that the formal/semi-organised 'low ground' shooting that would now appear to be pretty much the norm in the UK does nothing to help show the HPR breeds at their best.

With reference to 'sharpness'. I believe that German dogs can still obtain certificates should they kill fox/feral cat when out in the field & this is suitably witnessed (it's not that long ago that they could be formally tested on this, so it is very much still in the blood). In which case this could be passed on to British bloodlines through German imports. My current dog has a German import Grandsire. She has been brought up with a cat & has shown little interest in them but she still managed to give me a scare towards the end of last season when she came upon a feral cat when we were out shooting.

Dogs still do obtain "certificates" in Germany for killing "vermin" animals. The D.D. [deutch draathaar] is a breed wherein such a killing "proof" is neccessary before it even can be called a "D.D." All D.D.'s are German Wirehaired Pointers but a German Wirehair Pointer is not a D.D., it has not demonstrated a proven ability and willingness to kill. This D.D. breed has it's own registry and only allows breeding between certificated dogs.

I made myself very unpopular with this countries foremost breeders of D.D.'s some years ago . I "caught" them out on another forum claiming trial wins for their D.D.'s that hadn't happened ! To the best of my knowledge no D.D. has won trials in this country but German Wirehaired Pointers have won several and have a few F.T.Ch.'s too.

Is it the Right hand side,or the left hand side??
There is no side that is better than the other', if you stick to it!
However, if both owners are Right handed, then surely it makes sense that the dog should be on the left?....that way,the Right hand would be free to do all things natural.
The perception is that if you are right handed, then you have more strength in that arm?...that would then mean your technique is all wrong!!!, because if you teach heelwork correctly, then there is no requirement for any strength ;)

Amber arrived here on Sunday afternoon, So after dismounting the owners car and attempting to Wrestle me to the ground! with the owner attached to a long lead and collar, clearly showing bruises on her arm!...we spent some time watching the owner and Amber walking at heel ,which was more like someone flying a Kite in a far too blustery day ,with the strings tangled

I would have liked to see a video of the owner for comparison! How come she doesn't pull you over or break your leg? Really interesting video to watch.

Because ,I havent spoken to it ,or looked at it for two days, just fed it ,and walked to heel on a lead for toilet breaks 4 times a day ;)
The fun parts are not too far away, with a bit of patience and calm.

I liked the video, i've never seen that thing of wrapping the lead around your leg. Our GSD still pulls on the lead so i thought i would give that a whirl this evening, it took 5 mins before she was walking happily at the side of me, so thank you for posting it

Having the lead there helps to deliver the correction at exactly the right moment and also gives the slack back again at exactly the right moment. Looking forward to the mornings walk now.

Thanks again
