how do you stop puppy spitting out dummy?

Post by crowdoon »

Hi all.

I have a 3 month old springer spaniel puppy i am training for shooting , i heard that a good treat for training was cheese! i tried this and he now sits on command for a piece of cheese!.i thought this was great so i tried a few retrieves and rewarded him each time , this all sounds great but now he has taken to spitting out the dummy at my feet and sits waiting for his cheese. can anyone give me some advice on how to stop this.
many thanks ian.

Yup, as Feebarn says, it's a baby, get on the floor and play with it, it will soon want to race back and climb all over you with the dummy in its mouth. Just don't take it too quickly and when you do either throw it again or give it back to the pup. It's supposed to be fun!

Cheese is messy when the dog is in yer lap! :naughty: Especially when it's trying to get it out of your pocket. if the pup finds you fun it won't need the cheese to make life interesting.

At 3 months I wouldn't be worried about the perfect retrieve just yet!

However, how about a bit of encouragement to pick up the dummy again, kick the dummy away a little bit then run backwards as the dog is approaching, also encourage the dog to look up at you as he approaches, as he'll be less able to drop the dummy if his head is tilted up.

Try using other retrieve articles too as he may be more inclined to hold something else.

start using a word (or a clicker) to mark the moment that he has earned his cheese. So he learns that he has to wait till he hears the word or click before he gets his reward.
