Puppy Pedigree Naming

righ to everyone whos bred puppies before or been involved with puppy breeding, how do you choose your puppy pedigree names?

do you
a) go alphabetical WITH a theme

b) alphabetical WITHOUT a theme

c) Theme i.e Cars

or do you leave it to the puppy buyer to choose (ie when they come to look at the pup before the pups are registered they get to think of a pedigree name)?

Just interested to hear everyones views & answers.

My first litter had a theme, but was non alphabetical.

Since then, been alphabetic, no theme, I've told puppy buyers what letter of the alphabet we are on, and they can chose if they like.

Because I breed so occasionally I tend to go for a theme. We've had villages in the valley we lived and more recently ornamental pheasant breeds.

I thought about starting from the letter A, but I wanted to choose names, and there wasn't enough to choose from with the letter A alone. So I just went for a theme that meant something to me, if I'd started from A I might have got to Z by the time I'm 70, and if I breed the occasional litter I like that the names will all mean something to me. So for the first litter, they were named with semi precious metal/stones in their name, which reminds me of my very fabulous and long departed Nan, who was a jeweller.

I think that's a great idea, the breeder I bought my recent pup from does that too ....my pups name is Road Rage see if you can guess the song and its singer

That's how Quincy's pedigree name was chosen. He is 'Everlasting Spirit'! I've been lucky enought to get to name my other two. I have a few ideas for when I breed my own litter. I guess if you breed lots it doesn't matter much and using the alphabet makes it easier to remember which mating the pup is from (if you notice it wins something, say).

We attempt to register each litter alphabetical, so all pups/dogs some years later can be dragged back from deep in memory banks .At times we include a theme but basically just finding two names per pup all beginning with same letters enough .Since the microchipping obviously once registered via name that’s it, no swapping about for a potential owner to take a name they prefer out of the list of registrations to go with the chosen pup.

The litter Monty sired had names of trees from the breeders gardens which I thought was nice. If I ever breed a litter I want to name them after the village pubs (as long as I don't have more than five pups I'll be OK!)
