When is Enough, Enough

Post by da.drew »

I've been successfully RAW feeding my two Springers for bout 6 months now and both are thriving on it. Storm, whos coming up to 10 months weighs in at 22.2 kilos, hes all muscle and is going to be a big boy. He currently has 10% of his body weight, about 6 chicken carcass a day. I noticed tonight that he was eating a lot slower than normal, Im just wondering if I need to cut back a little

How do I know when hes at his adult weight? When is he an adult?

2.2 kg a day, bloodyhell thats a lot . I dont feed raw so im not going to get in to all that but still sounds a lot and 22.2 kg at 10 months for a springer again wow hes big.
If it was easy it wouldn't be so much fun.

He's actually on less than that, but 10% is the guide as pup then 3% once hes full grown, Its closer 20 12 to 1500 a day dependding on the size of the chicken pieces. Hes a real strong boy, no fat on him at all!

I feed raw, but to me six chicken carcasses daily is a lot!

Also I personally feel that is too much bone and not enough variety, you don't want them to grow too quickly. I would be cutting back and adding in different types of offal.

The chicken is just a kind of a basis, they do have veggies, tripe etc So they do get the variety, I use the chicken as a measure when Im explaining it to people. The diet is supposed to be 10% of their weight as a pup, so 6 is actually only about 1200 grams depending on size.

I've got two pups, a cocker that's 9 months & a lab that's 7 months, they've both been fed RAW since weaning, they've had an odd bit of meal but not much. I've never fed them more per day than I would an adult dog, both appear healthy.

At 10 months of age your dog has more or less stopped growing in height, I would be feeding 2/3% of his weight now, he is no longer a puppy...........

I have a 40kg GSD and he eats >2kg per day at 8 years old which is much more than he should eat on paper but he needs it.
The reason a dog has so many friends is because he wags his tail more than his tongue!

Too much food IMO. All figures are a guide only. What does he look like? Are his ribs visible?
