Totally agree there sounds like the vets where looking at strawberry sugar paper not an X-ray!
Thing is, if it was the artery (which looks likely), then there was no way of discovering it. The X-ray was a red herring. By all accounts, X-ray interpretation isn't an exact science anyway- especially in young dogs.
She's just been doing laps of the house with a chew-stick it's going to be hard to 'keep her quiet'!
This sounds like a weird one off sort of case which perhaps could have had a different outcome with early use of advanced imaging...but where advanced imaging really didn't seem to be indicated at the outset. Add in the fact that advanced imaging (MRI or CT) is only available at specialist centres and costs £1500+ and you see why this very unusual problem wasn't diagnosed earlier. Only the OP knows if the vets seemed competant in the treatment of this case and can make a choice about whether to stick with them.
If theres one thing that is for sure, if ever a dog has a bandage on, please keep regularly checking it and changing it. I had a friend whose Weimaraner lost their leg due to a bandage applied too tight. Sounds very similar. Surely that would constrict the artery? Peeping toes should be warm, and have normal colour, I believe?
