Can only echo that advice, and try and find someone that knows what they are doing, there are "gundog trainers" springing up all over the place, and some of them don't seem to have a clue.pontbeck wrote:If she hunts and retrieves I

Depending on where you are based, someone on here may know someone worth going to see.

PS I've no axe to grind, I'm not a trainer.

How much does she vocalise? If at all.
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

Not at all really. Thankyou all for your advice im in Cornwall
Re: got told by a trainer that my dog won't make a gundog
If she is quiet when working there is no reason why she can't make a good gundog! You just have to find a good trainer to help you.
As others have said plenty of people have turned around dogs much older than that and are working them successfully in the field. Change your trainer.

Don't give up. I've a ess who is coming 16 months, was told by a trainer he will never make the grade because his drive to self hunt was to great hence the reasons I was struggling with recall in scented areas. ( Due to giving him to much free rein when young). Since then I have had 2 one on one sessions with a different trainer and been working hard on the recall and stop whistle all at close range with minimal off lead work and when off lead its working close and for short spells. Don't get me wrong he isn't the finished article but he has improved dramatically since I altered the training regime slightly.
Get yourself in touch with another trainer and get your confidence back. Good luck.

For goodness sake! Poor wee soul. Sounds from your post as though this 'trainer' hadn't had your dog long enough to make such a decision. Also sounds to me as though 'trainer' needs some training! Don't listen to such rubbish and - as others have said - find another trainer. Someone who will also have the skills to train and help you. There are some excellent instructors/trainers around but far too many who dont have a clue. Dont give up; find out who is worth going to in your area. Where do you live? Oh, just seen that you are in Cornwall. I'm sure there are people on here who would know who to go to in that area.
