DIY Dummy

Post by Suba »

Does anyone know where I can buy some canvas Fire Hose, to make some dummys?
I believe this is whats used, but cannot find a supplier.
I see some folk using paint rollers as well - might try that.
I need at least 16 of them!

Any other ideas ?
What have you made that works for you?

the good old sock bundle never fails for me- a stout walking sock, filled with whatever you like! tie it up at the top, and hey presto, it's a dummy.
cheers,
Alice.

You could go to your local fire rescue centre and ask.

Wullie uses rolled up scraps of carpet....They've gotta be the cheapest coz he's Scots and as tight as a DA so he leads us to believe....

I've seen a trainer at Crufts using an old paint roller.

I do use rolled up and tied squares of carpet. They cost nothing, they weigh less than a standard dummy of the same size and dogs seem to like their texture. Their weak point is that they become water sodden very easily.
My previous paint roller dummy had a serious flaw.... it didn't float when I tossed it out into a deep pond. Cost me a small fortune that dummy did and it couldn't be thrown very far either. My main dislike of paint roller dummies is that some dogs seem to think they are for playing with. Their very light weight encourages "mouthing" while their hard inner core seems to encourage some dogs to bite down on them.

Sock stuffed with wine corks. Flexible & flops naturalistically in the mouth, floats, nice, fruity bouquet & gives you an excuse to drink lots of wine, if such an excuse was ever needed.

Thanks for the replies.
I tried the paint rollers and they seemed to be very flimsy.
The fruity bouquet of my socks, I wouldn't bestow on anybody Naj!, :)
3 tennis balls in a walking sock sounds pretty good.
For the price of buying some fire hose and filling, it's just as economical to buy ready made.
I've found those large rope tug toys that have a knot in each end similar to a dumbell
are only a quid a piece from the Pound Shop and do a good job.

As I have a sailmaking sewing machine and some spare canvas, I'm going to have a go at making some .. just wondered what to fill them with to get the weight. What are the commercial ones filled with? I'm reluctant to dismember one of the ones I've got to find out. :-)
