Like the others - thanks for posting the videos up they're very interesting! (You'd have a field day with me & mine :o  )

I'm watching this last batch in turn and after the first part I have a question for you:

At about 7 minutes in the dog is stopped on the whistle (but I can't hear the conversation at this point!).You get the lady to reapply the whistle & apply more pressure on the dog moving closer before throwing the retrieve. Was this because the dog's gaze wasn't fixated on the handler?

I'll watch the others shortly :-D

Iain :)
Aye Iain!!
It is best to watch them one at a time ,ask questions ,then the follow on!!
The dog (and handler), were both trained/training', to a scenario, of 'remote helper', in this situation ,all be it 'intentionally good'?, that by aiding in the training, 'I will throw the dummy for you'??? , what had happened was the dog was 'taught', and learned ,that the reward came from the 'remote helper' not the handler? In the part you are asking , 'I am installing', a change in direction of focus , away from that 'remote helper'( in this instance the 'camera man'), of which you will notice throughout, the dog still has, a fix', for? but by 'continuoly, not rewarding, from the 'remote helper/camera man', the reward is achieved ,if the dog 'fixes on the handler ,for the direction'!
Hope that made sense?

Haven't managed to watch all yet as I am viewing several times, but thanks for taking the time and trouble. So interesting and useful to see. I'm really enjoying this one.

Hi Robert,

What I notice is the lady is still snatching the dummy rather than encouraging the dog right in probably because she's anxious about it. The dog will pick up on that is that what caused the problem in the first place do you think?

Thoroughly enjoyed your videos Polmaise, just wish I could hear what you are saying to the handler when you move away. I have a Labrador, but still found the spaniel handling very interesting, it is like having a private lesson myself. More please............

Ok - Video 2 question 2!

In this one you're leaving a dummy for the dog to find as it hunts and you get it to work with the wind behind it. Is this just for the purposes of the exercise so the dog's pattern isn't disrupted by following a scent blowing towards it or is this how you'd normally teach hunting? I've always been taught to hunt into the wind as a following wind can cause the dog to miss things and drift ahead of you too much....

Yes Iain,
Like many of the posted threads questions on here! "how do I" ? "what do I do when"? etc.
This is only 'a moment in time,for a particular issue,for a particular dog,with a particular handler'?

Quite quickly, as I have never seen the dog before(much like readers of posts on a forum) ;) I recognise that ,the dog is associating a reward(retrieve), in this situatuation,!!... is related(and associated) with the remote 'helper'. ie one who has thrown the reward, not the handler who has """created the reward"""" ;)

I just 'recreated the reward', to the 'find', on the deck!, rather than coming from the 'remote helper'? :o
With regard to 'Wind', it was imperative, that the wind was behind us in this situation!!!, otherwise the dog would simply ,scent on initial cast off and be taught to 'retrieve' on cast off?

As regards YOU being taught to always 'cast the dog into wind'?, you must ask ?, like I do now, Has YOUR dog got the same issue?? if not , then dont!, If yes then do!? ,but only 'until' the desired affect has been achieved , then move on as normal???(whatever that normal is)
The beauty ,of 'One To One? It is 'Specific'!

Pol, this is often the case where people follow books and DVD's ie "always cast your dog into the wind" This method does work in some applications but as you said working into the wind for this training method you are on a looser  .

Another one that springs to mind is "always send your dog for the first dummy down well this is also correct but when your dog gets used to this method he will never go for the last one thrown. I have seen dogs trained like the books tell them and when I have asked for the dog to go for the last dummy down it has gone for the first one down even with the handler giving a clear hand signal for the first dummy down.

The key thing to this training method is to swap around the one you send the dog for once the the dog starts to get wise. How to notice this is the dog will start to lean to the dummy he thinks you want or even face it.

Hi Darren.
Just my point ;) cliche's are often used,(abused) in Gundog training, that are often 'misleading', to the novice?
There is much more, that is 'specific', to both the individual Handler, and the Individual Dog ;) It is so very difficult, through text,to 'guide', or explain, and especially, when the 'information', is given ,without seeing 'the action/reaction, of the situation?

Look forward, to your 'forthcoming DVD Though?? ;)
Cheers
