Re: kennel/ run size for cocker spaniel
thanks for that. think i will go for a dog.
i've had summervilles gundogs recommended to me as a good breeder in the north east so i'm going to contact them soon. i believe they have pups ready on the 7th of may. problem is i won't be able to arrange time off work at such short notice. so i'll have to go on the waiting list for there next litter. no rush, at least it will give me more time to get everything ready and read as much as i can/ ask daft questions on here.
much appreciated.

Jonny, I take it that you have not got the pup yet?
If at all possible book some leave between you and your girlfriend for the first few weeks while settling in the pup, but straight away get it used to a crate, it will associate it as it's own safe haven if you train correctly. A lot less expense, but more importantly in today's age less chance of the pup getting stolen!
Do your research on crate training/routine, it will be worth it in the end.

Re: kennel/ run size for cocker spaniel
Our bullmastiff was crate trained and we highly recommend it. Useful for those times when you don't want them under your feet such as cooking cleaning etc. as well as when he needs a time out. At night he would be fast asleep within seconds of being put in his crate. Quite often he would put himself in there during the day although we did occasionally have a tired grumpy pup that would play up until we put him to bed. Once he was bigger and we allowed him to stay out of the crate at night, invariably you would find him fast asleep in it in the morning. The other advantage we found was that I became tuned into the crate noises and knew when he was restless and needed to go outside.
As has been suggested earlier, cover 3 sides of it with a blanket (or blankets in our case!), some vet bedding and he has his own little snug. One thing, we never ever put him in there as punishment, he needs to know it's his safe place.

Re: kennel/ run size for cocker spaniel
So am I doing the right thing here I have a cocker bitch. When I can't take my dog to work with me or go out of the afternoon etc. I have her in the kennel on her own. The kennel is luxury all insulated and roofed run is 6ft by7ft and house is 6ft by 3ft. I always leave a hide chew for her so she has something to occupie her self. She is always in and out when we are home and always in at night. She never makes any noise in there and seems happy enough in there. I just see it she's better out there than in a crate in the day.
Re: kennel/ run size for cocker spaniel
I really wouldn't worry about it. In the house on its own, a crate or a kennel, if the dog wasn't happy it would let you or the neighbours know.
