Training for good dummy/ game delivery

Post by Mrs Crosshair »

Please could I have some delivery advice. I have 2 cockers the older one has done two seasons beating and picking up she is fantastic very obedient and a keen retriever however on beaters day at our shoot she started to deliver dead birds to my hand as usual but put down the runners securing them with her foot so they didn't get away!

My younger cocker has only retrieved cold game to practice with feathers and delivered these well but with dummies she will drop them at my feet then leap into my lap! I can get her to 'hold' and 'dead' with a toy in the house but although she is very keen to retrieve the dummy's she doesn't want to hold them as a game. She is loony and concentrating is a bit of a task for her!!!

Any advice greatly appreciated, thank you.

The putting down of live game could be the result of a scratch or peck from a runner and the dogs not going to take any chances of it happing again. My mates young springer came across a pricked goose when she was 10 month old and the goose gave her a good pecking so the pup grabbed it by the head, from that day on for the next 9 years every goose was retrieved by the head.
