Springer keeps laying on pups

Post by Steepness »

Our springer had a litter 10 days ago even being in a large whelping box with rails keeps sitting/laying on her pups. We have been with her constantly since she had them. We seem to rescue at least one a day. When the pup 'screams' she takes no notice and just looks bemused. She is a maiden bitch. Just wondering how common this is. Our lab bitch was the most gentle mother possible, miles away from the springer.

Not sure what to suggest really ... some bitches are just more careful than others. It is quite upsetting as we had a lab bitch who was just the same and we lost one at 10 days old .. flat as a pancake and she did this in the five/ten minutes she had been left !. Good luck with your pups and lets hope that everyday they will be bigger and stronger to hopefully help out their clumsy mum !! :-D

This might be a silly idea but would making the box smaller work? Ie less chance of one getting separated and then more likely to get laid on??

Thanks for replies. Will give anything a go. Hopefully as said everyday they get bigger and therefore less easy to lay on.
