Milly's Mad Moments

Post by Duncan »

I recently took out my 11 month old bitch for her first water retrieve. Very pleased with outcome.
Here I have attached a short video.

Stage one complete good swimming action and entry and it is picking the retrieve and confident to return swimming in mouth

There is a rule of thought you only concentrate on training to get over water to a flung mark. Some only do this right from start, I for my part believe in introduction like you did but quickly get on to marks over water and concentrate on them only with other exercises further back from water edge when sent and further out over other side to develop marking skills or blinds across water as they gain experience. The reason I was given to get on to marks over water was to stop the pup associating that they get there retrieves solely on water, just like quartering further out it is best to associate the pup that he gets out natural with no limits other than your direction and does not look solely on the water, marks on water are easier as they can be directed to them or seen as they cross having being seen the mark. Getting this instilled to get over to dry land like a river for example is very important and the water is only a path to this not the barrier that it could become as you will need a lot of handling to encourage to get over if you concentrate on retrieves in water to detriment of marks over water.

Nice pup.

I would sort the delivery out before worrying about any more water work.

Spare kennel here too, :-D she's great! My best ever Flatcoat used to parade the dummy at the most inopportune moments, just like Milly.

Another moment with Milly, only part of the video has uploaded. Doing some light hunting which will improve once she is on gamey ground. As you can see the delivery is still the same this is something I don't worry about at this age.
