Re: RAW Feeding
Am I alone in thinking that the dog making a beeline for sweet spring grass and wheat is indicating a need for some sort for vegetable matter? I thaw a handful of frozen cooked veg, or a few boiled spuds into every meal. My ESS dog is 24kg and in very good nick. His daily feeding regime for ages has been a 400g block of Prize Choice frozen raw minced meat (tripe, chicken, lamb, rabbit or beef), plus 400g of Burgess Supadog Triple Mixer - all split between two meals with the few vegs and an occasional raw egg added. The frozen blocks are dead convenient, and 10 minutes in the microwave on defrost is all they need to prepare them. He also gets a few vitamin enhanced treats.
My problem now though is that the local supplier has stopped stocking the Burgess Mixer, so it's either buy it over the internet or change to something else - I'm reluctant to do that unless I can see the product analysis on the alternative mixer and few give that info (so I suspect that it's mainly otherwise useless residues and derivatives).
Someone mentioned a need for offal (I haven't been including that, considering that the Burgess mixer balanced everything up, but will do so from now on.) Also, has anyone any views about mixing cooked pasta in the dog's meal? I do that from time to time and it seems to be fine.

Re: RAW Feeding
I'd always been told to feed the raw and the kibble bits of the diet separately as they digest at different rates?

Interesting, thanks.

This question cropped up last week on a springer forum - my reply:-Springfield Pointers wrote:No.Miesque wrote:I'd always been told to feed the raw and the kibble bits of the diet separately as they digest at different rates?
me on another forum wrote:I’m not sure how scientific the stuff about different digestion rates is – other than for changing the toileting and water intake habits, if a dog is used to digesting kibble, does it really matter if they digest raw a bit quicker? I don’t have any issues feeding different raw protein sources to my dogs in the same meal and, when you think about it, loads of owners add sardines or tinned meat to kibble. Also, when you change from one kibble to another, it’s usually recommended to do so gradually – so that’s mixing the two together. What suits each dog and the convenience/practicalities for the owner are probably more important than what other people say"
Re: RAW Feeding
There is no peer reviewed scientific evidence that a) this occurs or b) that it has any adverse effects.Miesque wrote:I'd always been told to feed the raw and the kibble bits of the diet separately as they digest at different rates?

I do not do measuring, I feed by hand and eye (although I have been doing it for over 12 years) much as I used to with horses (before it became so technical)
I think if you feed what your dog likes and it suits them and they look and perform well, what else is there to know?
Amen
