Pleased to hear Ozka seems okay.

Schilling was bounced as a youngster by a black Lab dog from behind - similar Schilling was on lead the Lab off). He was wary of black Lab Dogs for a while (fine with bitches) but a couple of playtimes with a friendly black Lab boy and he regained his confidence. If you know anyone with a friendly BC that you could meet up with somewhere that Ozka can go off lead he may benefit from that encounter before he meets one again on lead.

Happened to Merlin today !!
My father in law was judging at a fun dog event so we went along to watch, took Merlin with us for a bit of a social, had to pass through a gap and at the other side was a Rottweiler sow e just stood and waited, the bloody thing just stared at Merlin then lurch at him and bit his face, got a puncture wound and a bit of a gash.

I was bloody fuming, luckily our vet was one of the sponsors so got him straight over to be looked at, it's not too bad really but just SO out of order.

When I had words with the woman who had the dog she tried to blame Merlin !!!

That dog shouldn't be at events like that, there's lots of dogs and young children, too much of a risk if you ask me..

To make matters worse after I'd taken Merlin home and returned, my father in law had given it a bloody rosette for something !!

Sorry to hear about Merlin I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

Today I introduced Ozka to a Black Cocker Spaniel to see how he would react to another black dog, and thankfully he was fine so hopefully there is no permanent mental scaring.

I will continue to slowly introduce him to other dogs under controlled conditions to build his confidence.

And right there would have been where I would have removed myself and my dog from the situation sharpish.

If you watch dogs together they very rarely make direct eye contact with each other and if a dog stares at another it's not a good sign especially if the other dog doesn't avert it's eyes and stares back.....

Gateways, doorways and an opening such as you describe can trigger this type of behaviour.

I'm really sorry Merlin got bitten and hope he's ok today and you have just about forgiven your father in law but it is worth remembering in the future.

Rascal, lesson learnt, definitely !!

Just took me completely by surprise.. :o

Merlin’s okay thanks, he didn’t once stop wagging his tail the whole time, even when he was crying at the pain…

Although I have 2 border collies myself, they are still a breed I keep a close eye on if we come across them. Thankfully neither of mine have the nipping tendency or round things up but lots do and unfortunately many owners use these breed traits to excuse their dogs bad behaviour, seeing it as something they cant (or wont) control because it's part of being a border collie. I'm sorry, I dont buy that and when other BC owners say things like this to me I like to ask them if they see my dogs behaving in such a way.

Glad to hear Ozka hasnt been affected by the incident, I think how the dog copes in the future largely depends on how we deal with the situation ourselves.

Thanks Wozzy.

Yes Ozka seems fine now.
Tomorrow the breeder has arranged a puppy walk for as many of us that had pups from this litter as can make it.
It will be interesting to watch how he interacts with his brothers and sister, and mother etc.
