I didn't think of that, i'll keep the lead on my dogs next time they are in the garden.
*The evidence of a persons ability is not in speech or ability to compose clever sentences or capacity to create riddles or need to find an alternative. It is found in the comparison of what they have, what they aim for and what they consistantly achieve.

I don't have pockets, I walk around my garden with speedo's on so I can just lounge in the hot tub. Any other suggestions for where I could keep it?Rascal wrote:Nah they'd only get snagged up on something, one in your pocket's handy though...lee-kinsman wrote:I didn't think of that, i'll keep the lead on my dogs next time they are in the garden.

Do you seriously not understand lee????lee-kinsman wrote:I don't understand?Springfield Pointers wrote:Your son does. Effective hey!lee-kinsman wrote:I don't train with treats.
Your son has effectively trained your dog with "treats" to sit next to him at meal times and he will not move.

Re: What do we think of this?
I would have walked up to the pup bent over it, stared and said "Come!" In an 'or else' voice then encouraged it to me. Seems to work. Kids don't see you making the dog yelp either which is good.
Wouldn't have minded betting on your son getting her into the kennel simply by walking over there with food in his hand.

In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.
Re: What do we think of this?
Why stop at Moxon? Moxon was only watering down techniques passed down from previous generations & sanitised for current day attitudes to canine welfare. There have since been similarly influential books that have done likewise, in line with modern thinking of today. I'm always amazed why his books are still so popular. He was an odd sort of bloke whose life ended on a sad & lonely note. He never really made it at trials because he suffered from crippling 'trial' nerves, & his bloodlines were never what you would consider to be influential. His 'influence' came out of his writing skills as much as his training, which came out of his friendship with the then editor of Shooting Times. I've used the example of him showing how to beat a Labrador before but, as far as I'm aware, you wouldn't find such an example in a modern training manual, or video. Scruffing, perhaps, but not beating. Training techniques don't stand still as if locked in aspic, they move on in sync with the times. There will always be the conservative die-hards who cling to the older methods but there will always be those curious to push the boundaries. That's human nature. Incidentally, if anyone is curious as to the potential legality of the training methods that they employ, perhaps they should have a squint at the Government's Animal Welfare Legislation: Protecting Pets. The Code of Practice for the Welfare of Dogs is quite specific on training methods & punishment. These things are always open to legal interpretation but if you look at the list of suitable Advisory bodies then we only have the KC to offer potential support. Food for thought.kent wrote: Lifting a Lab off the floor? Try P.R.A Moxon training and field trials page 97 (feet not off floor though) captioned " correction by shaking is most effective" the slide under illustrates using a lead threatening correction. Caption reads " whipping should be avoided if possible" Now he wasn't that sturdy a fella and Labs were bigger back then (as were springers ).
Now anyone want to say they know far better then perhaps we should await their book being published and seeing how many re-prints it runs into and how many top trainers of today can still quote their work written 50 yrs on

And thanks for the kind words, Alice, but I am still learning.

So he's trained it in the same way that a rabbit trains a dog to chase after it hell for leather.Wendy M wrote:Do you seriously not understand lee????

I doubt my son would have got to the kennel before the dogs had successfully taken the food out of his hands.
But I do have to admit. You are all teaching me alot.
Anyway, time to go and slip into my speedo's and try and think of somewhere to put my dog lead.
