It is with great sadness that I read your post ........ can only imagine what you are going through as I know you cared alot for Jem.

Such a hard decision to make with one so young but you were there for her through thick and thin right to the end when you put her first and let her go.

My thoughts are with you at this time and I really hope that these horrible genetic problems are bred out from the gene pool .

Sleep well Jem ...

Hello Nicbw

I really hope you're wrong about your pup. Jem started chewing one paw at 5 months. I thought she started because her paw was cut during the hard frost in November but this was just my assumption. She wouldn't leave it alone...6 months later I had to bandage 3 of her paws several times a day to stop her chewing. Looking back I don't think I could have done anything differently. We had many ups and downs and I was determined to get on top of it but eventually had to admit defeat. My vet tried everything and eventually Jem was referred to the Glasgow Vet School and they diagnosed sensory neuropathy - little or no feeling in her paws and lower limbs. Acral mutilation is the name given to chewing the paws. My advice would be to see your vet as soon as possible - I think some vets haven't seen it but you can do your own research by looking up the terms above. Sorry to appear to be negative but the sooner you get advice from your vet the better. With your pup, it could just be an irritation that will eventually go away, I hope it is.
Best of luck with your pup and if you want more information, just PM me and I'll tell you what I know.

Thanks for your comments straydog. I'm still heartbroken about having to put Jem to sleep at the tender age of 10 months...it is such a cruel condition which robbed her of her future and me of a delightful companion.....and her sire is still advertised as a stud.
