Re: Turn whistle
About 17 18 yards I want to get it so he hunts about 10 either side and about 3 in front

Re: Turn whistle
Well, i don't exactly fuss, i praise/tell the dog in a clear way that i'm thinking that now it's doing the right thing AND let it hunt on as reward for doing it right. So when the dog turns and run toward me i praise, no need to sound silly if you got a business like hunter but you should make sure your dog get that it's doing right if only by a low key pleased 'good boy'. The biggest reward is of course that she gets to hunt on, i made myself very unclear there, sorry.Cocker spaniel boy wrote:When I tried this he comes back stays there for about 2 sec while I fuss him then shoots of again hunting on the other side I don't think he is relly bothered about fuss he just wants to hunt onI say aj-aj-aj (ah-ah-ah) and walk after, put leash on, put dog back to where i whistled the turn, sit dog down, walk back a bit and whistle turn. When the dog turns and run towards me i praise lots lots. What i am super extra careful with is to never let an ignored turn whistle slip. You may think my reprimant is weak and not really effective but it does work for me so i see no point in adding more growls, runnings and yellings. If i ever feel like taking a few quick steps i won't beat myself up cos of that but i honestly don't think it will make a difference to the dog. I have to add that my dogs try their best to follow what i want so when training turns or whatever it's not obedience training. I never use hunt training to get a more obedient dog.

I think Cocker Spaniel Boy should book himself in for a few lessons with a spaniel trainer who has had some success in Field Trials A.S.A.P.
We are only guessing at the interactions of man and dog on here. I.M.O. they need to be seen in order to give really good advice.

+1 on what trekmoor writes. As is with most training behaviors, training dogs via the internet, really hard to give accurate advice on just about any thing except for the most common basics. More harm than good can come of it!
