Training near Chalfont St Peter, Bucks

Post by Woodsy »

Hi all,

Am just about to get a GSP puppy and would like to find out if there are any gundog trainers relatively close to where we live. We will not actively work the puppy but want to have her trained in the correct way.

I am brand new to the site so apologies if I should be looking in a particular thread or part of the site - all advice greatly received....

Best regards

If you are not going to work your dog then a specialist gundog trainer would not be needed. Also be aware that teaching/encouraging dogs to hunt means they will hunt even where and when you may not want them too. Sometimes it is better to let sleeping dogs lie if you will never actually need a hunting crazy dog. For example ....if you don't want your dog to herd sheep it is better never to let a dog develop an interest in them.

@trekmoor - ah, I was talking to someone at the Chiltern Gun Dog Association who said it was the right thing to do to fully work the dog's brain as well as the physical ? Do you think I'm better off with Basic training first followed by maybe some agility or Clever Dog training ?

@lagopus - thanks for the heads up on Allan :-)

Cheers

I'd ask why won't you actively work it? If you're not against the principles of game shooting, then train for it, get out and enjoy it!

You may find that once you have your GSP you will want to work her :-D I found that GSPs hunted anyway, whether taught or not, so a good idea to learn how to control that hunting in a well mannered way. I am sure you will find owning a GSP a life changing event, it certainly changed mine and very much for the better.
