That'll be due to the lab blood.Rookie wrote: The least successful was the Lab X Springer. It was a total plug and as thick as two short planks.

Now, now, no rudeness please
You should meet my Lab, he will go through any cover an ESS would go through and he definitely isn't thick!
Edited to say to think I had a Lab after 5 GSPs because I wanted something easier!

Well, he only ever had one springer before that and it really was as thick as sh!t in a bottle. After that and then the lab cross springer he kept away from anything with stupid spaniel cloth-ears for many years!
Until recent years that is. Now, his current favourite is a springer.

I have a GWP x SRHP but although we train, I dont work him, he's predominantly a pet so his skills have never fully been utilised.
I've never really nurtured his hunting skills and although they are there, i've no doubt surpressed them so his hunting isnt as hot as it could be. Once he gets a whiff of scent up his nose he switches into high gear but until then his hunting mode is turned to the off position. He's not a ranger and sticks fairly close yet if I get him on heathland or moorland where he can see me clearly and there is alot of scent he'll range 200 yards. I'd say generally he's not that switched on to hunting but once his switch is flicked he's more than capable. He does hold a staunch point too, probably a bit too sticky at times.
Retrieving seems to be his strong point though and it's absolutely one of his favourite things to do and something he's very good at. The 'R' is most definitely stronger than the 'H' and 'P'.

I've got a lab x gsp, or at least, that's what we think he is! He was bred from a friends two unruly pets of dubious background but I'd never had a dog before and you never look a gift horse in the mouth. And I'm damn glad I didn't! 2013/14 will be our third season picking up on one of the best estate shoots in Kent (so I've been told). He lives to retrieve and I swear his pointer genes have helped him locate shot birds sooner and from further away than the other labs and he tends to work further from me than I would expect a lab to. He has a couple of niggling faults but I put them more down to my inexperience as a trainer than his breeding.

I have a ESS which I bread with my mates Cocker as they were really good working dogs and I liked the attitude.....
They worked out really well as I have kept a pup from each litter so I have two now, they are stunning looking dogs and work very well while been bigger than a cocker but not quite as wired as an ESS, what an excellent combo...
Hi I'm phil by the way,,,,, new to the gang!
Cheers
