What's the best DVD, as I don't do books.!

Discuss any aspect of training you have, ask questions, share tips and advice for any breed of gundog.

Do I hear pots and kettles? its funny how we all read different things into the written word isn't it?

I am certain you won't be able to train a Retriever, or a Spaniel for that matter) without some form of study other than DVDs and you will still need to either have one to one lessons with a decent trainer or attend classes at a Gundog Club. Any of our NI members know of Clubs which hold classes? These are usually held in the Summer months which will be just about right for your pup, it will be old enough for the serious stuff then.

Meantime enrol yourself into winter Obedience Club classes, that's a good grounding for retriever work and will do the pup no harm until you can start proper gundog work in the Spring. And, errr, have a skim through some books, they don't have to be read cover to cover, just bits here and there will help, honest! :)

What do you intend using your IWS for?

I'm not a great fan of 'how to do it' books and vids myself but there is a short-list of books I will be reading before I get my next ESS.

I'd back Judy's suggestion of obedience type classes over the winter/spring if only to lay a solid foundation. Bryn and I have been working our way through the KCGC system in tandem with his gundog training, the Puppy was very good, the Bronze was a bit 'meh' IMHO (probably because Bryn was being a complete a**e most of the time), the Silver award he's on now is very good and ties in well with the other training we're doing at the moment, the Gold syllabus seems to ramp things up quite a bit after that.

As others have said get in touch with a trainer for 1-2-1, if not find good club even if you have to travel a bit.

I have to say that's a very naive comment, I don't have a lot of time to read but do so avidly on anything to do with dogs....

If we used the ecollar in the manner it's meant to be used instead of the "fry the dogs brains" way we seem to employ over here, then maybe they wouldn't be considering banning it....

You might find it interesting to read up on the way the collar is used across the pond gazelle rather than having what appears to be an un knowledgable pop. :?

Absolutely typical of the ignorant nonsense I've come to expect on this forum.

Well, you were the one who used the phrase "can't be bothered."

You don't want to go to the trouble of reading a book, because you don't enjoy it, and you don't want to work with a professional trainer. Well, there's a lot to learn in training your first gundog and you're not going to learn it all off a couple of DVDs.

I'm the other way round, I prefer books to videos , it's down to the individual I suppose.

A bit harsh, I thought it was a joke? Anyway, lets hope all the odd comments and shenanigans on this thread haven't put off our new member completely.

Are ya still here Amos? :49: Don't be put off by this lot, we always have the dog's best interests at heart even though it may not sound like it from time to time.
