Well it transpires that the Collie owners insurance does not cover animal on animal attacks or injuries so now my only redress will be a civil action to reclaim the cost incurred.

Alternatively I accept it as a cost of dog ownership.

Does anyone else's pet insurance carry a specific exclusion for animal on animal/attacks/injuries.

Might be worth getting them to check their house contents insurance too as sometimes that covers third party claims against dogs.

I wouldn't be accepting it as part of dog ownership. It was caused by someone else's carelessness.

I've been watching this post unwind with some horror. It just gets worse!
I have no idea what I would do in similar circumstances. There, but for the grace of god........
I hope that Oska continues to recover and that you are able to enjoy the rest of his time as a pup. My own HWV pup is full of beans and I am aware of how easy we've had it in comparison.
Sadly, I know that the stress is not over. Civil action could be expensive and is risky. You can represent yourself, it's not hard if you've got all the paperwork and a reliable witness, but what happens if you win and the collie owner just doesn't have the money to pay?
Many years ago I did a favour for someone and (to cut a very long story short) he tried to take advantage. I found myself being sued for £10,000 - a figure plucked out of the sky. It took 3 years to get to court. The judge awarded him £575 which was the true amount owed but I was so hacked off by the process that I pleaded poverty and then coughed up £25 a month. Sorry, that comment probably doesn't help but you should be aware of the pitfalls.
Best of luck though.

That sounds very odd. What insurance company? I've only ever seen exclusions if the dog is known to have attacked before.

Well the latest update was that the household contents insurance does not cover it.

I have now instructed solicitors to send a letter clarifying the position and requesting settlement.

The owners pet is insured with animalfriends

http://www.animalfriends.co.uk

I just checked and it appears to be a general exclusion.

8.3.2.3 as a result of your pet’s interaction with other animals or worrying livestock. (Copied from their website)

I checked with the KC and their insurance does provide cover for incidents like this

Well here he is with only 12 more days of anti-biotics and already hard at work in the office.

He is still a very handsome lad Tony but do you think letting him sit in a chair on wheels is sensible given his ability to get himself taken to the vets ...
