The cocker had his first flush this afternoon, living at the edge of the Wolds it was always going to happen at some point and since his stop is not in place anywhere other than the garden i had already decided to recall if a flush happened.
Well it happened today, he stopped as we walked to the wood, nose in the air and shot into the vegetation hunting furiously, a pheasant took off right in front of his nose so blew the recall and back he came.
Not earth shattering i know, but i was chuffed to bits.
I always get nice comments about 2 things, his colour and his recall.
And now i know i am more interesting than a big fat juicy pheasant
Congratulations Birdy! It's a great feeling, isn't it. It makes you realise that all the hard work doing the basics was well worth it. Onwards and upwards, but Naj is right - watch out for over confidence.

Thanks Naj you are right of course, but trying to train my first gun dog and a cocker at that i will celebrate every little success i know already that tomorrow may bring more frustration
But isn't it addictive

It still is
It's only a small step and as Naj said next time he could well bog off, but i am enjoying the experience and wish i'd started years ago.
My next post is likely to be stop training
