What do you use for kennel bedding.?
What do you use for kennel bedding.?
Just got a outdoor kennel/run setup for my IWS.
He is hell for being in rivers, most times we are out for a walk. When I get him home I towel dry him, and put him in the kennel/run. But hours latter he is still soaking.!
What the best thing to use inside the kennel to keep him warm, and dryer etc.!
He is a chewer so most things don't last.
Thing cow mats cut to size, vet bedding, shredded wax paper ( but I'd say it would go everywhere ).!

Re: What do you use for kennel bedding.?
Would he cope with a hairdryer fitted with a diffuser being used to dry him off better?
Cow mat with the ridges uppermost would help keep the water draining away from him and he'd struggle to chew it. It does help to insulate the bottom of the sleeping box too..
If he's a chewer vet bed wouldn't last two minutes and shredded paper would need changing with great regularity...

Re: What do you use for kennel bedding.?
On a shoot day, i put coats on the dogs and they're usually fairly dry by the time they get home. Their body heat combined with the abdorbancy of the coats helps.
In the kennel, we use shavings on the floor & plastic tubs full of paper shredding. On cold & wet days they get heat lamps (ours have full & half power switches) with ceramic red bulbs. Not bad on energy & they're on for a few hours after they come back from training etc.
I guess it helps that i have more than one dog in the kennel as i often find they snuggle up so close to each other you'd struggle to seperate head & tail.
I've seen others that have sleeping boxes in their kennels (room permitting) & they're usually draught free & are packed with old duvets/fleeces/blankets/kids mattresses etc.

I use hemcore horse bedding in their kennels and they love it. Really absorbs the water and a quick shuffle round and it's back to almost new

Friends off mine just use straw Amos. Can cause irritation in dogs with sensitive skin though

Re: What do you use for kennel bedding.?
Rubber mat with vetbed works for mine. I don't find many dogs chew it (until it's old and nasty). I would also suggest a fleece rug as these dry mine in about half an hour.
Re: What do you use for kennel bedding.?
I put one of my old half-zip fleeces on mine & they dry in no time. Doesn't cost me anything & is made of the same material as the commercial dog fleeces. One problem with (some) bedding & wet dogs is that the dog might get dry but the bedding can remain damp.

Heat lamp and a bed raised of the ground for me wood shavings sometimes

Getting the water out of a soaking wet Irish Water Spaniel, wiv all them curls must be the devil's own job, much easier with Spaniels or Labs...
Bedding other than stuff that will drain the water away from the dog rather than leaving it in a sodden bed will be very difficult.
I don't think a coat will soak it all up, have you tried these .......?
