Didnt want to hijack Helene's thread, but wanted to ask if anyone can recommend a decent instructor/range in Ayrshire? I did ask at the local fish/tackle/gun shop earlier this year but they werent particularly forthcoming. I did find a couple online but would ideally like some firsthand experiences before shelling out (pardon the pun).

Has anyone tried Cowan's Law or South Ayrshire Stalking?

Sorry , I haven't any experience of clay shooting in Ayrshire but Bisley at Braidwood is an excellent ground situated between Selkirk and Newton St Boswell , not too far away if your in Eastern Ayrshire and well worth the trip.

North Ayrshire shooting ground at Dalry is pretty good, I shoot there about once a month, although I have never had a lesson from any of their instructors. We did watch Ron take a group lesson a few weeks ago whilst waiting on the skeet layout. it looked like a corporate day but the guys seemed to enjoy it and more importantly - were hitting the targets!

Forrest Estate, as mentioned above is also good, more natural layout and nice scenery but i dont think you can't just turn up and shoot like you do at Dalry, you would need to book. They do other activities there like fishing and stalking whereas Dalry is primarily a clay shooting ground with and air rifle and archery range.

Cowans Law also, I have never used because it was more expensive

Forrest Estate is my favourite, friendly and excellent customer service, the last time there, it was quiet, Andrew came round with us to "button" and keep scores, 3 of us pretty much got a free lesson with all the hints and tips he gave us, also went into detail about gun fit, eye dominance and took us to the pattern plate. Spent a lot of time with us - you won't get that at Dalry!

Check out the websites....

I suppose it depends where in Ayrshire you are. Ron Howie at North Ayrshire Shooting School gets people hitting targets quickly and would be my first port of call to get accustomed to shooting. Reasonable money too.
