Gundog training in Aberdeenshire

Post by John Porter »

I have been using the excellent service provided by Ashburnham Gundog Group in East Sussex to learn how to train my Golden Retrieve Maxi, since he was one year old last August. He is progressing really well but we are moving to Huntly in Aberdeenshire in 3-4 months time. Can any forum member advise of any training facilities, clubs or similar in the Huntly area, where we can continue to progress our training.

Helen Gray (Rothievale on the forum) has trained a Springer for me and I've been very happy with her methods and results. She has also done one to one training, so while it isn't a club situation, Helen knows what is available around the area with clubs etc. She is around Newtonmore, not exactly on the doorstep, but probably not much more than an hour journey time from Huntly. I'd suggest give her a pm.

Nic Hannan 'drummuir' on here is in Aberdeenshire too, I'm sure she'd know of something.

Welcome to Aberdeenshire!! Unfortunately, as it stands there is not a lot going on up here. There are a few good trainers who will offer 1-1 training if you catch them at the right time of year, but currently no group training. However....there are some very nice friendly locals, who enjoy occasionally getting together to do some training/talk (a lot!) about training. With any luck someone experienced will eventually be convinced/coerced into running the occasional class...we're working on it!!

In the mean time, Nicola and Helen would both be good people to contact for some 1-1 help. If you're after some like-minded novices to hang out with and share tips and ideas (and some dodgey dummy throwing) then feel free to get in touch!
