Dog Poo, Any uses?

Post by countrryboy »

Alright folks

I know this sounds a stupid question but has anyone came up with any uses for it?

I was recently doing some research into composting toilets for my local wildlife trust, and they are really quite straight forward and simple. So if u can compost human poo into safe fertiliser in a year is something similar possible with dog's?

Can't see why not other than the issue with round worm eggs which tend to be very resistant - so the fertiliser would not be acceptable for ground crops but should be OK for fruit trees and tomatoes. We have a local method of making a fertiliser out of sheep droppings but for the same reason it is not used for vegetables.

I used to train for a large dog kennels with about 40 dogs, mainly spaniels. It was also an equestrian centre and had about 15 horses. All of the horse and dog droppings were put into the same large compost heap and I never heard any complaints from the folk who later used the compost.

Dog poo can be 'digested' and composted in a wormery ... but the guidelines still say not to be added on crops once compost.

We started a wormery for his purpose and the worms coped with the quantity of daily poos from two decent size dogs ... but no matter what I did getting the wormery temperature maintained within optimum range defeated me ... I could not bring myself to have the wormery in the house and even though insulated somewhat the shed wasn't warm enough in winter.

Sometime when I can construct a suitable shelter for the wormery I will try again ... not least because I hate the amount of plastic I have to use to wrap the poo to put it in the dustbin.

Dog poo can be used to throw over your garden wall into next doors garden. Next doors cats have been so kind to leave their mess in my garden over the years, so it would be rude not to reciprocate !

In all seriousness, I haven't done the above but have thought about it many times. The cat mess does go back over to their side of the wall.

For the human toilets they were adding sawdust/straw for extra fibre and seemingly the secert is to keep it well ventilated and not too much liquid.

If round worm eggs are resistant i take it it would not be a good idea to walk ur dogs throu the area where u spread it?

Nonehpets just noticed ur line about individually wrappping poo,

My dogs are kennelled which makes it easier but i just put any into old 20kg dog food bags and just put a fullish bag in the bin every week or 2.

My problem with this approach is I have to carry the poo through the house to the wheelie bin out front ... one bag full of the stuff is just too risky of leaks etc.

I also have a poo muncher and need something more robust than a plastic sack to store it in ... so I have a small plastic lidded bin (the Poubelle ... for those with a smattering of french ;) ) in the dog yard and individual bagged poos get stored in there and then decanted into a big sack to go through to the wheelie bin once a fortnight.

Double bagging also reduces the chance of the wheelie bin becoming completely rank! and makes the Poubelle quite easy to keep clean(ish)
