Mother wishing to visit pups, but when she does...

Post by NZShooter »

...problems!

My GSP gave birth to 10 pups beginning of January, they are now almost 7 weeks old and we are weaning them onto solids slowly but surely, but they still crave Mum, and although she seemed to go right off them for a while, she now likes to go and have a check and gets quite agitated if we stop her, however once we open the gate to let her in, she backs up, and doesn't want to. If we push her in the pups of course go nutty and try to suckle, and then she starts to growl at them.

My feeling is that she's had enough of them, but I don't want to deny her or the pups for that matter some kind of natural bond or food.
Anyone experienced this, what's the best course of action?

Thanks in advance

hi

imho i wean my pups off mum about week 5-6 and no wonder mum doesnt want to suckle the pups, they're growing teeth  so they probably hurt her. she carried them for nearly 2 months and nursed them for a month, give her her life back. take her out for a short fresh air walk and get the pups a few chew toys for them to play with.
Have you got the pups onto puppy mash yet?

At seven weeks old they may only have a week left with you, therefore they should be ready to be without her by now, I have had my pups weaned and separated by this time as it will only put more stress into the break up. stop her feeding and try to break that bond not the reverse. this has led to no problems for myself in the past.
Good luck.

Thanks Guys, We've been weaning them of her for two weeks and they are on Eukanuba Puppy food and Milkreplacer/Warm water which we are slowly dialling down. Can't seem to find "puppy mash" here in NZ, so I making gruel using the aforementioned.
That's not really the problem, it's more she wants (of her own accord) to get to them, but as mentioned once there she growls and wants nothing to do with them because as a previous poster alerady said thy have teeth.

My concern was that we are stopping her going into them because of this behaviour, but I wanted to double check that this was OK to do.

rewster68 sounds like we're not doing it too wrong, as they have only had maybe three to four feeds off her in the last 8 days, so it could well be that as you say it her rather than them. Thanks for the advice.
