Re: Working Golden Retrievers...
Why not wait a while and make up your mind after having met a couple of them and seen what they're like?
As you know, I've got another air scenting retriever breed, and I've found her much easier than people led me to believe, but I think that's partly down to her breeding, she's just such an easy temperament to get along with and has bags of ability tucked away. Despite my poor handling skills she's come on very well over the last year, fingers crossed she'll do even better this year.
Personally, I prefer retrievers, and mixing a spaniel in would confuse the heck out of me, but that's because I'm knocking on and easy to confuse. I've looked after a fair few spaniels before, and even ran one on for someone for a few months teaching the sit/stop and recall at the puppy stage, and he was a stunning young dog. But I still prefer my retrievers.

If you are interested in working Golden Retrievers then put the name Phillippa Williams into You Tube and watch her display at Crufts, 2012 and 2013 is there, and I'm hoping someone will post 2014 soon, she loves the breed and does very well, also got Labradors, flat coats and her lovely little cocker 'Secret' all working in the ring and enjoying themselves immensely.

In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.
Re: Working Golden Retrievers...
how good is that.?!
Re: Working Golden Retrievers...
I used to love watching the Holway dogs work. Is the kennel still on the go?

To be honest Jo, this is what I'll have to do, I wasn't looking until June at the earliest anyway. In the meantime, I'll find out as much as I can about GR's and write it all day and compare it a Cocker and what I want and go from there. As you know, I'm used to retrievers and made a lot of mistakes with Pippa, but I know I wouldn't make half as many mistakes if I got another Retriever, however a Spaniel is new territory again, but I volunteer at a gundog kennel now so they'd offer me any help I needed whatever breed I go for. Until I can definitely say I want one or the other, I'm not going any further!Tarimoor wrote:Why not wait a while and make up your mind after having met a couple of them and seen what they're like?

I watched the display at Crufts which is what pointed GR's out to me, they just stood out if you know what I mean?dogwalker wrote:If you are interested in working Golden Retrievers then put the name Phillippa Williams into You Tube and watch her display at Crufts, 2012 and 2013 is there, and I'm hoping someone will post 2014 soon, she loves the breed and does very well, also got Labradors, flat coats and her lovely little cocker 'Secret' all working in the ring and enjoying themselves immensely.

I think that, firstly, it might be a good idea if you made your mind up on what type of work that you need a dog for, then it will be obvious whether to choose a spaniel or retriever.

Except to those of us who use Spaniels for the wrong thing.
And used a Flatcoat for beating.
