Few questions :)
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could help me, what are the basics equipment needed, for a total novice? Also any good books or DVDs which will help?
I have been trawling through you tube, I don't know if this is doing me good or bad favors? Also i have been using the word sit for Tizzy, but have heard others using Hub? am i OK to be using sit? or should i try changing it, or would that seem impossible?
Thank you in advance, also apologize if these seem like stupid questions, I am a total novice when it comes to this and any help would be gratefully received.

Hi.
Sit is fine to keep using. You can use any word you want as long as you are consistent and it gets the required action.
Equipment is basic really to start with I would get a whistle ( acme 210.5), a slip lead, couple of tennis balls and a couple of canvas dummies.
What are you working towards with the dog?

Hello
I have got the slip lead, and a canvas dummy. Were would be the best place to get the whistle?
That is the thing, I am not actually sure.
Tizzy was only going to be a pet, like her mother, but i soon realized that unlike her mother, she needed to be doing something more than just being a pet. Mentally and physically. So a women i met through horses, who had gun dogs, spent a bit of time with us both and we are doing sitting and waiting while i throw the dummy and then me sending her out to retrieve. She just shows us a little bit more every couple of weeks . But we are both really really enjoying it and I would love to take it further but I don't actually know what I am supposed to be working towards? ( I feel a little silly saying that)
A gentleman i know has told me about a club few miles away from were i live, hes going to ring them and i am going to go along.
I don't know if what i am talking about is even possible, have i left it too late to even start thinking of doing this? With Tizzy being 2? But she is really responsive.

Re: Few questions :)
You can get the whistle from a gun shop, eBay, various online suppliers.
If the dog is responding I'd stick with it. Even if you never end up working the dog, doing the training should be good fun and a learning curve. It's also great mental stimulation and beats pointlessly romping round a field with other dogs everyday.
Sounds like your keen to get involved, stick with seeing the woman helping you train regularly until the basics are firmly in place - recall, retrieve and stop whistle. Once these have been mastered the training can progress.
The club could be a good idea as it will give you an understanding of what's required, see how others go about training, gets the dog used to working with others and also gives yourself an opportunity to meet other people that are in to working dogs. Once the season starts again one might invite you on a shoot for a days beating to see how the dogs work on a typical shoot.

Then you'll wonder why you ever bothered to train yours!Charlie mac wrote: Once the season starts again one might invite you on a shoot for a days beating to see how the dogs work on a typical shoot.
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

Totally agree Judy
You're welcome, I'm sure you will gain lots of help and advice along the way from this forum.
Good luck with the training. It can be addictive, and stressful
I can't wait for the light nights myself, can get some decent sessions in after work then.

Hi Wizzy Tizzy
I don't know if my reply is a bit too late - but have you thought about attending this year's CLA Game Fair..? I don't know whereabouts you are in the Country, but this year it is being held at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire the weekend of the 18th July.
If you love doing what you are doing now, i highly recommend the Game Fair so you can totally immerse yourself in all things "country" ! There is also great shopping for items such as whistels, dummies etc and the Food Hall is usually to die for
There will be working dog displays and scurries etc and it will also be a great source of information and inspiration ! i have purchsed my tickets today and am really looking forward to it ( fingers crossed the weather holds out ! )
