9 week old cocker testing my patience
Guys, i really am struggling with my cocker pup, my patience is at breaking point tonight! first off, dog is to live in the house, currently crated at night and kids feeding times. I fed the dog when i got home tonight the usaual sachet of james wellbeloved and she gulps it back like a seagull is the only way to describe it (i find it annoying!) i then take her out to go toilet. she then comes in runnng round the kitchen?living room searching for food non stop! tonight i have given another sachet ("X sachets!!!) and again gulped like a seagull as if she is starved. finished up and running in and out of kitchen looking for food, rattle aplte and shes at your feet. Take outside wont poo, walking round for half hour, bring her in trys to wee on carpet so picked her up ran outside and she finished her wee, praised her. bought her in and she starts lookimg too poo, agin outside do this about 5 times nothing, put her in her crate and she starts whining again outside nothing runs across grass for the door X5 times! back in crate and she is whining non stop put her into garage left out with crate open garge door shut and she just whines then i go out and she has pooed. now put her in garge crated and turned light off, whined for 10 min and stopped, this is tonight!!
My nightly routine has been ro take her for a walk until she poos then bring home crate her for the night and go bed, couple sqeaks and she sleeps, i then come down around 3 times during the night and take her out.
My gripes from all this are the constant pestering for food and greediness and the whining
What am i doing wrong and what do i need to change
thanks Will

If she is crated I wouldn't keep coming down during the night. Your rewarding her whining. She shouldn't mess the crate. Take her out first thing in morning so she toilets and praise her. I'd be giving her 3 or 4 feeds per day split throughout the day. Do you feed her in the morning or only when you get home? If your only feeding her once then she is probably starving and you really should space her food throughout the day IMO.
If your crating her in the garage in the dark she is probably scared. She is only a baby. Unless she is in with other dogs leave her a radio on and a hot water bottle.
Just find a routine and be consistant. Cut her some slack too she is only 9 weeks old. She'll be missing her litter mates. If your getting stressed out already your in for a long and ardious road

Re: 9 week old cocker testing my patience
she is fed 4 times a day, she was out with me and when we got in she was fed. I dont come down if she is whining i wake her to take her out during the night, however if she is in her crate and whines i take her right outside and generally she has been going toilet i then praise her carry her indoors and return her to her crate to settle.
Perhaps its just the rain she isnt liking i dont know! She is all settled now

Welcome to the forum and to puppyhood.
It looks like she is being quite normal for a 9 week old pup, its a routine you must get into.
After sleeping, eating and playing take her outside to toilet, close the door and stand with her until she performs, when it happens loads of praise.
I know its not pleasant at 3am in your jim jams, she will get it shortly.
I have just gone through it again, my girl now is 20 weeks.
As for the feeding just make sure she is getting the correct amount at every feed, also start to introduce a bit of training at feed time?
Make her sit before putting the bowl down.
How much exercise does she get during the day, or is she crated?
Dave.

Re: 9 week old cocker testing my patience
I know it's not easy, but ignore the pestering for food.
Does she have a box with bedding in her crate that she could snuggle into? She doesn't need lots of space when sleeping. She will be missing her litter mates, so the box/bed should alow her to snuggle in and the bedding should wrap around her. This should help her feel more secure, she is only nine weeks after all.

Re: 9 week old cocker testing my patience
just a quick obvious question has she been wormed lately that might explain the food issue.some dogs live to eat though and that could be her.iv an 8 month old cocker and she is a disaster when eating picks goes for a drink comes back 15 mins it takes and sometimes she wont even finish it. most days morning and evening.id give it 14 days give or take and she will be well settled.for the last 4 years iv had a pup every year and they dont long to settle.the biggest prob is this bitch been fussy eater
Re: 9 week old cocker testing my patience
How much are you feeding per day? Four pouches? What's the recommended amount? When was she last wormed? Why are you getting up three times during the night?
Cover the crate with an old blanket leaving just the door end open, put a box on its side in the back of the crate with some bedding in the box, make sure there's no staples cos the pup will destroy the box sooner or later. I put some toys in but its not obligatory! We usually shut the pup in with some food stuffed in a Kong, by the time its eaten that its ready to sleep and forgotten its alone.
I go to bed late, OG gets up early, in between the pup is left undisturbed unless it gets frantic the first couple of nights. Even though the crate is large and has the box at one end and newspaper at the other the pups have rarely toileted during the night.
Is the pup played with for short periods? Not too long as they get overtired and become fractious like kids whinging and charging about driving themselves and everyone else mad.
Finally, its a puppy! Doesn't need walks, shouldn't be out until its had its vaccinations anyway, don't over tire it, don't expect it to lie around quietly all day like older dogs and if you're that fed up with her already I'll have her, she sounds perfectly normal to me.

In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.
