I'm interested in a pup from this mating. One thing worries me though - Anna's sire Craighaar Boris, has produced pups with hip scores of 69 and 24...

I really wouldn't be worried about that

Would you worry about a year old cocker pup with a right hip 27 and a left of 23?

A stupid question and not related to the original statement, if you'd like to start a thread asking who would worry about a cocker pup with the scores you quote, feel free to do so

Boris sired over 600 pups I think and a couple have bad hips? No I wouldn't worry, you can put 00 to 00 and still get bad hips, you reduce the risk but there are no guarantees, these are dog, not precision built robots.

Poor scores can be due to many factors, environment breeding and so on but there are far more qualified people than I am who can tell you all about hip scores.

DNA eyes, hips scores are part of the picture a tool to help us choose, just like colour, sex, type and breed. All personal choice and in this instance I really wouldn't worry about an animal with Boris in its pedigree. But that's my choice.

How many of that 600 have been hip scored?

If I were to be looking for a foundation bitch I, personally, would want something which wasn't closely related to a dog throwing poor hips however good the lines were. There is such a poor history of hip scoring in ESS could anyone be sure their own line is clear and when it comes to line breeding from your bitch / dog where would you go to be sure of not throwing pups with poor joints?

I agree though that there is no guarantee even with fully tested parents but we should be doing the best we can, perhaps?

So, are there a lot of working bred springers presenting with hip related mobility problems? Can't say it was a problem in the breed when I was involved with it but I had my last springer some 20 years ago.
