A good pup is bred from parents that compliment each others abilities . While F.T.CH. X F.T.CH. looks bloody marvellous on paper it gives no guarantee whatsoever that the pups will have the ability levels of even one of the parents - far less two of them. If the lines of the parents have been shown to "nick" well , producing top quality pups in the past then such a mating may be well worthwhile.
I believe that producing quality pups needs a bit more thought than just putting two f.t.ch.'s of the opposite sex together !

Great post Wullie .I saw a 5 generation pedigree recently that had only 4 dogs that were not "coloured red".None of those dogs in "red" were FTAW`s they were ALL FTCH`s.It got me thinking that i have very rarely seen FTCH x FTCH pups for sale in the press,ie shooting times,gazette etc etc?.Do these pups just get sold between the top guy`s in trialling?.What i mean is, on the pedigree i mentioned FTCH x FTCH produced FTCH time and time again across 5 generations.Is this because the matings were the best possible or simply because they went to trialling homes?.Obviously a dog sold to a none trialling home would never have the title FTCH ,not through lack of ability,but by the owners choice of sport.So realistically the man that shoots over his dogs every week could be breeding pups as good as the top trialling men but without the FTCH title due to him not wanting to trial?. Or could he?

Does that not depend on what any individual considers to be a "good" dog. These trialling dogs might be great dogs, but in the wrong hands I'm betting a good number of them could be disasters. Maybe the shooting mans dogs are already "good" dogs - for what he wants from them,
On the other hand, I suppose a trialling man would have to happen to see the shooting mans dogs work, and see the potential before he would be likely to take a punt on an unknown

shame, what is going to be your plan of action mate, wouldn't you go for a dog which is known to you or a friend which really excells in the shooting field, after all FTCH is only a title.
