If you could give just one tip for a puppy owner....

Post by Sam&Maverick »

Hi,

We are hopeful that we will be able to work our lab puppy Maverick when he is old enough.

He is currently 16 weeks old so he doesn't have any bad habits as yet which has got me thinking......

If you could give just one tip or somerhing you would do differently with a puppy what would it be ?

Many thanks
I can only hope that I am half the man my dog thinks I am.

I'm not overly experienced but I would say make sure that you are the centre of their world - you are the person with whom they have the most fun with, keep yourself exciting. Any animal that wants to please you will be easier to train. Also be consistent from the word go, it doesn't matter how you choose to praise them or reprimand them (within reason!) but make sure it is always in the same way and for the same things - if that makes sense. Have fun :)

Don't give him too much freedom I.e don't let him run up to other dogs in the park etc

Equally don't be too overpowering on the obedience, it should all be a fun learning process.

Have a read of this thread too: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3443

If it was easy it wouldn't be so much fun.
