Final Straw!!!!

Post by Longy0710 »

After being out for an hour tonight with my dogs and having a great evening steadiness training I encountered a black staffie straining at the lead over 300 yards away. I had one of my labs sat up in a sit stay while I watched this dog drag its poor owner nearly off her feet. It eventually slipped its lead and came barrelling over to my young lab. I popped a lead on my dog who remained in a sit (training is working!!!) all the while being harassed by this over zealous dog. I attempted to heel my dog away but still no luck with the dog still glued to mine. I shouted at the dog in question (just a growl) who backed off long enough for the owner to restrain the still marauding mutt.

This is where the straw snapped. This indignat woman started to shout at me for raising my voice towards her "nervous" dog!! I politely reminded her that my dog was still under full control and it was hers who was in the wrong, still no apologies from said woman who dragged her dog away retorting "come on, some dogs aren't allowed to play!" I was lost for words, I cannot understand why people owning dogs do not bother to train even the most basic of obedience, if only to be kind to the dog! I didn't make an issue of it but every cloud has a silver lining, it has given me the push to get out tomorrow and go and approach a few farmers for training grounds, fed up with the general public lol! So fingers crossed for a positive post tomorrow.

Rant over

Never mind, just think how great you'll feel when you see somebody frantically feeding treats to their on lead dog to keep its attention whilst you walk by with all yours at heel off lead.
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

You must carry a sack around with you if you feed your lot on the hoof!

Feel for you as I have had this kind of thing too. Blaming me for putting my dog on a lead! Even had someone spit at me 'cos I obviously 'shot poor birds' - she could tell as 'we' are all alike and strut about with whistles round our necks and weird clothes. These people will never be told and will never learn. Yes, total muppets! Not worth losing any sleep over.

Reminds me of a time I was out. Eactly the same scenario. My resolution was to take out my dummy launcher and boom a blank through it. The owner was very upset with me screaming, "is there any need?" To which I replied, "yes".

I have to say though I do feel guilty for scaring her mut I was more than impressed with how quickly it got back to the owner after hearing the bang.

Ah! That'll be you and Judy who've met me out with the dogs!

Joking aside, it is really irritating - it is always the person with one totally out of control dog who says 'you've got your hands full' as we walk by, at heel (JRT excepting  ) totally ignoring their dog and their increasingly frantic attempts to recall it as it decides life with our pack is a much better option. We used to stop and wait for them to catch their dogs but now either catch it ourselves if it is being a nuisance or walk on. On the plus side, it is great for distraction training....

I have been out with my 4 and come across a man with a very boisterous border collie that was bouncing around on the lead choking itself......blimey, how do you cope with that lot he says......as we trundle past, my girls taking not the slightest bit of notice of him or his dog!

Perhaps the difference is that you are interested in training, because it is your 'hobby', but many others aren't, otherwise they would.
