Sorry I just don't understand what this achieves except make the handler feel better. Do you think the dog understands for one moment why you are dragging it around. It doesn't make any sense at all.

Er yes, I don't do anything whilst training my dogs to make me feel better :? and it has and does work for me. Demonstrating what was required instead of just getting angry. Lots of praise at the end. Job done. Never had one that hasn't understood and I've trained quite a few dogs ;)

not acceptable ,taking his embarrassment out on the dog, however its easier said than done to bring this up .
99.9 % think its wrong but not that many will bring this to the handlers/guns attention

The image of someone "beating a dog with a stick" certainly conjures up some emotion, but what exactly was the context? Some people don't like any sort of chastisement for (their) dogs. Some folk consider frowning at a dog too harsh. Holding s dog by the jowl, doesn't mean "swinging it by the neck" Sure there are folk who bully dogs and use a beating that is inappropriate, but lets not jump to conclusions with minimal information.

This thread comes to mind. viewtopic.php?f=13&t=21230&start=40

Thank you for your replies - I did express my concern to the handler and got a "mind your own business" response - sorry for any offence this post has caused, will mind my own business in future and look after and work my dog to the best of my ability.

I don't see any real offence caused by your post and as you will see it's an emotive topic, I think one or two folk might have been slightly suspicious of this as a first post is all. Mainly because it's the exception not the norm in my experience.

Most keepers wouldn't tolerate it though so probably a word in the keepers shell like wouldn't go amiss next time, if there is a next time. Nobody out for a days sport wants to witness that type of behaviour.

Enjoy the sport and your dog....

Thank you Rascal - it was a first post only because it was the first time for me in this situation and I didn't know where to go for advice - I know forums in any industry/hobby can be hotbeds for trouble but sincerely this was just a result of experiencing a difficult situation and as a very new gun dog handler - I wanted to find out what methods were acceptable - personally I would never raise a stick to my dog - I want respect not fear.

Good on you for saying something to them, and apologies if my response seemed hostile- As Rascal says, I am indeed suspicious of such posts when they're a member's first. As for finding out what methods are acceptable, if it's not acceptable to you as a reasonable human being, chances are isn't not acceptable to the gundog 'community' as a whole.
cheers,
Alice.

Interesting ,

A few different opinions . So the obvious next question is what is the acceptable level to chastise someone else's dog :o :-D :o :-D . Or is this the ultimate bad in shoot day etiquette . If so I better get my coat.

Come on people get posting your opinions it's the only way a forum works :-D :-D
