Bertie Spaniel

Post by Valiantsteam »

Well we have him home now for nearly a week, So far so good, mind you its been 15 years since we last had a Springer puppy and you tend forget how sharp those little teeth are at 8 weeks.
At the moment he eating well and seemingly growing every day, As per all Springer's he is adventurous and exploring all the time.
First night here he cried for about 4/5 minutes then peace every night since the few whimpers then peace .
first night a small puddle on the floor and a tiny poo ,since then been clean every night ,I go down dead on 6am let him out and its a massive pee and after a gallop around he does a poo ,Bring him back in and some food.
I have been using my time tried method of getting some form of obedience even at this early age ,nothing more than getting him to sit to voice and hand signal. For those who do not know this method nothing is easier .
When you have the dogs bowl of food let them see it.hold it in your hand left or right and then say sit ,at first the dog will scamper about jump up etc. to see what's in the bowl, but usually sooner than later the dog will put his bottom on the floor in a sitting mode ,As soon as the bum is on the floor give the dog the food .There is no point at this age making him sit and wait ,for it far far to young.
Keep this up and within a very short time the dog will respond at first asking .
So then when you have the dog outside after the initial scamper to let of steam and a pee etc. hold out your hand and say sit or what ever command you have been using ,any half sensible dog will sit ,make a fuss of the dog and leave it ,don't keep doing it as you will bore the dog and you become annoyed so just the once ,but if possible do this as many times a day as possible.

Well Bertie or Bertram to use his official name is now precisely 5 months old today.
He is a very good little lad and at long last seems to be growing out of the *I want to use my sharp little baby teeth on anything mode*
He is growing nicely and not a choosey eater at all ,his local Veterinary is pleased with his growth and general health progress ,he has been micro chipped and all the injections he needs to help him through life.
I have started gentle light training on him and as the guy who jumped of the 30 storey building said half way down So far so good.
His response and eagerness to training methods are quite amazing, as I said in my original greeting to this forum I have had Springer's for 50 years and I can honestly say I have never had one who seems so eager to please. Obviously very early days as yet .
he responds to the whistle well and sits on one peep immediately .his recall to two peeps is excellent.
Using a donkeys years old light canvas home made dummy he retrieves to hand nigh on perfectly, comes to me sits and waits till I take it.
So you are all thinking what does this paragon of the Springer world not do ???
When you go to put the lead on him he prances about and makes silly noises lol. But he is getting much better ,and walks pretty well on the lead I have started walking him at heel for very short distances of the lead at heel and he seems to keep to within what I call a sensible distance a couple of feet in front or behind. Personally I have never seen the point of having a Springer glued to your heel terrified to move more than six inches from it.
He is an extremely affection little lad and excellent company.
A nice image of him at his training field with his homemade dummy is hopefully enclosed.

Nice little write up. With my new pup at 8.5 wks old I know what your going through! Though not much of a nibbler at this stage. What she lacks in the teething dept she's making up for in her willful explorations of the gardens, but knowing her breeding that's to be expected!!
