Pontbeck , How many dogs have you seen that do all jobs well ? Walk one stand one are great days to let the dogs do everything .I just want a gundog that I can take anywhere ,driven day , beating , picking up and be happy to sit at my feet in all weather on foreshore .

Dogs will do what you train them for, and expose them to. You can't expect a roughshooting dog to settle down in a duckblind if you've never given it the task. Good dogs are built over time.

That's been my experience. Macbud, if you want your dogs to slot into all those tasks then you need to give them regular exposure to each one. Dogs are very good at discriminating & learning in context, providing that you give them the opportunity to be able to do so.

Totally agree , they are meant to be shooting companions that you can enjoy a day out with . They certainly learn and sometimes think they know better than me what's expected . Bad thing is they usually think this when there is an audience .

They certainly do know better than me. That's why I use them and give them license to think.

No truer a word spoken and if they lived for 50 yrs they could be very versatile indeed no doubt.
