You lot do know that you can also catch pheasants and just club them with a heavy stick, you don't even need pointers, you can use a Rottweiler, they are far cheaper. It's real fun.

Well,
The pump is no more reliable than an auto as regards filth , suffers from short stroking from less practiced users and is not as fast as an auto and very unpleasant to shoot heavy super magnum shells from in terms of recoil energy. However like the lever action it has a past and history in the USA ;) just like the SBS double English / London sidelock here. Difference is its cheap unlike the London gun.

Safety is in the eye of the beholder and also his knowledge of firearms of all types. For instance a loaded but broken double is still capable of discharging on closing (hence close with the barrels pointed in a safe direction, stock/action to barrels pointed down and safe not barrels to action on a level plain "often seen" ) and you need good eyes to see if there are shells in or not at distance.

There is some "that's a weapon of war" thing in game shooting here also a view that its unsporting to have an extra shot. In fact I have never seen four dead in the air from a 2 in the mag one in the pipe UK legal shotgun but I have seen four birds from guys with two double ejectors and a good loader at his side and once saw it from one guy on his own with one double ejector gun taking 4 Geese out of a single big skien.

Use what you like or what is acceptable to your host! Myself? I like an Auto for my day to day shooting on the saltmarsh or at vermin though I have a few doubles (all side by side) I had a few stack barrels but I didn't like them as they opened too deeply and I didn't like them in the carry or in a hide. I also have two single shot break action guns (what a different feeling when you don't get a second chance at bringing down that bird), shooting teal with a .410 single shot on evening flight is super cool but you need to know what not to shoot at! ;)

I've had all manner of guns from a pump to a Perrazzi. The make or type doesn't concern me it's the feel and balance when I bring it up to my shoulder that counts.

Well said! If it does not point for you it is hard to hit the red side of a blue barn.

I may have this wrong , is it true that the american police went back to pump action shotguns from pistols because the clunck of the cocking action was far more scary to villains than just shouting stop or ill shoot kinda thing Blanco ?

Having had all manor of guns from a pump action 410, semi auto 12 gauge, bolt actions and so on I wish I could get on better with a side by side but I just can't. I would love a nice side by side but I'm crap with one so I stick to the over and under, the others have their place but I don't like to see them in the line of guns on a driven day. It's just a person choice thing actually even more so in line on a walked up day. It's been said before but I just like to see the barrels broken at a distance you can see it's safe and the others chuck the empty cartridges about and are much more difficult to find in cover and I hate with a passion old cartridges left to rot and rust.
If it was easy it wouldn't be so much fun.

Dogs rather like to pick empties if you ask ;) I never leave an empty unless it sinks fast in deeper water. Of course you can also buy shell catchers
a broken gun that's got shells in the breech is by no means safe!. in fact the safe catch on most break actions doesn't even lock the sears only blocks the triggers. Safe gun handling is not an accident! Yes I have seen many a guy trip in a walking line, only takes a gun to close with a good enough bump (remember its the sears not the triggers that must release) Look at combat troops and how they actually hold and run with loaded autos with a round in the chamber all with their mates at their side, accident rates were very low to non existent until they changed when and were the safety was switched in an engagement. No
An empty chamber pump held over the shoulder might be among the safest of all walking guns with shells only in the mag, the issue is how others feel about that one rightly or wrongly
